have a a few days worth of facial hair. Maybe 5-7 (I know it varies) but it is to the point where a cartridge razor would pull and tug on it, I'd have to trim before hand. Should I trim or let the DE do its thing?
Might be a good idea to give it a quick trim first. Easier to practice and less likely to nick yourself with shorter hair.

You spend your time getting all your Oh Brother Where Art Thou Dapper Dan Man rig situated and ready.
Meh. I fill up my scuttle and soak my brush in hot water for about 5 minutes - I do other things during that time.
Takes me about 2 minutes to work up a lather, and 10 minutes to make 2 passes - I've dropped the ATG pass, and just do WTG, and XTG. I don't feel the need to upgrade my equipment and I have not bought blades in over a year.
I do use the Proraso cream - the guys who use hard soap do need extra time to work that up. But, I don't feel that the extra 2 to 3 minutes to shave - while shaving less often, is a waste of time - it is less expensive and a better quality, more enjoyable shaving experience.
If the $32 a pack plastic cartridges with thin strips of metal you're scraping across your face in a hurry, in the shower are working for you - go for it.
But, please, for the sake of civility, don't roll in here and pretend like we're hipster doofuses - because I did the plastic razor thing for over 20 years (ETA: Strike that - closer to 30 years - I'm old). I rarely got a good shave, even taking my time. If the advantage is speed, the trade off is irritation and hating the shaving experience. I don't hate to shave now - I kind of look forward to it.
And did I mention, even after the initial outlay, I've spent about half what I would have in plastic razors over the past 18 months? And that will continue to drop.
In your case, I would recommend trying a badger brush and a good quality shaving cream. If the plastics are working for you, at least get off the harsh chemicals for a cycle or two - that alone, is about half the improvement.

Mack just wants us to know we're wasting our time and money.
He's trying to help out.

I'll stick with hating it before I spend $25 on a little bottle of shaving cream.
Go to Bath & Body store in the mall and get a $10 dollar tube of C. O. Bigelow. It will outlast $10 worth of canned stuff and is a much better product.

My Ultimate rich lather recipe.
get a bar of glycerin soap (whole foods) with a cedar/sandalwood scent. Take your wet brush and rub up a rich lather. Drop in your dollop of Proraso into the mug along with four drops of glycerine and start mixing with the lathered brush. ad a bit of h2o if necessary. Your face will love you for it.

I would recommend trying a badger brush
I just got an omega synthetic brush, and it really works quite well. It comes in other colored handles if you search it (mine is blue...couldn't find chrome, sadly). I like it a lot, and I predict it to have a fairly long life. The bristles are a little stiffer than the brush that comes with the Art of Shaving starter kit. It's much easier to clean and much faster drying though. The drawback is that it does not hold water very well. It's not hard to put a few drops in with your hand when making a lather, though, so I don't think it's all that much of a drawback.

Have an Edwin Jagger De89lbl What do you think? All reviews I've read are positive. But your second is a merkur SLANT.? One is a starter and keeper. The other is for a lumberjack? Least that is my understanding.
I love my EJ, I have not used other brands so I can't compare. Before I bought mine I researched quite a bit and it seemed to me the fit and finish of the EJ was a little better than the Merkur. I was not disapointed and after setteling on a blade(Gillette Silver Blue)see no need to buy a different one.

So much hostility toward the shaven. I really only began looking because fusion cartridges got so expensive. Then started finding forums about it. And dollar shave club. Which is where Mack needs to look if he wants to be more frugal. 9 bucks a month and they have a 6 blade razor. Couple that with barbasol and he can spend all morning with his kids basking in the glow of his raw red face and neck.
I kid. Dollar shave club is nice. If sticking with cartridges. I may hate my DE when I get it? Who knows. But I will always stick better creams and preps. As has been mentioned shaving is now enjoyable instead of drudgery.

I can shave from full beard to clean shaven with my DE loaded with derby blades and lemon shaving oil in under 2 minutes. Thats with two passes.
Try that with the vibrating plastic monstrousity they sell these days.
And as for how easy it is.. my ol lady now uses a double edge for everything.

That's crazy. It's not like cutting your chin.

She cut her ankle the first time...slowed down. Everything has been smooth sailing since then.

Just used my new jagger with tobs sandalwood. I must say I absolutely loved it. I bought a variety pack of blades and used the shark blade. Wasn't as sharp as is wanted but that could just be me saying that because I was slow and cautious. Man, what an awesome process. Never touching a cartridge again unless it's an emergency.

Super chrome or stainless?

I like those a lot. They're fairly sharp, I found. The Shark Stainless were the worst things that have ever touched my face. They hurt. They tug. They pull. I almost quit DE shaving because of them (2nd or 3rd one I had tried).

Check on Bigelow. By far this is the slickest, best shaving cream I have tried. Now on Mitchell's Wool Fat with a few drops of glycerin to help. MWF lathers up quickly and is thick. I use Merkur long handle (model 34?) and like to try different DE blades. I am trying Lord blades now.

Thank you for this thread. I have enjoyed it and the good info it has provided. I will be bookmarking this for future reference.
I just use a Mach 4 razor and some cheap gillette or edge shave gel. I will take some of the info in here and more than likely change up how I do my shaving.

I had a terrible experience with the Shark, too. I liked Derby and Lord. I settled on the Gillette 7 O'Clock (Russian Green). I will try others in that line before I buy Feather in bulk.
