For those of you that use tobs soap, how do you create the lather? Use a scuttle?

You can. But you can also just use a coffee mug. Any type bowl. And whip with brush.

I've been using a de razor for a couple of months with proraso green and love it. I'm going to try some new soaps and creams. Any post shave creams to recommend? I'm almost out

On the tubs I take the brush and run it in a circular motion inside the tubs for maybe 10 seconds then I take my brush and use my mug and star working up a lather. Add water as needed... Very little water at a time.

After reading this thread, I invested in a safety razor and all that comes along with it.

I'll never go back to 4-5 blade modern razors. I actually enjoy the shaving process now.

Too many to mention.

Kiss My Face is available at Whole Foods if you have one. It is awesome and a couple bucks less than. Proraso.

Any Taylor of Old Bond Street is good. It about 15 bucks a tub but lasts as long or longer than the Proraso. I have sandalwood, avocado, and almond. If you want to step your price up, Truefitt&Hill or Geo F. Trumpers are 2 more.

Dirt cheap but decent is Williams Shave Soap. It's about a buck for a puck of soap. Pretty neutral smell so you can throw a dab of any other cream on top of the soap cake and whip with brush to make a ridiculous lather. Williams is ok on its own but does dry quickly and is not as creamy or dense, if that makes sense.

That's the biggest thing. It takes something you thought of as drudgery and turned into something relaxing and therapeutic.

ETA I keep my fusion and schick hydro around for emergencies. Like a shave in a hurry or after a couple beers.

Also have my dad heading back here after cleaning out his old stuff he used before switching to twin blades in EARLY 80's

I am really curious to see what gillettes he has. Mom says I "bought" him one as a present when I was too young to remember. I will use those and the Edwin Jagger I will buy. So I am set for the rest of my life essentially. And my son is too if he so chooses.

The Edwin Jagger is a very nice DE razor. Don't really know if I would need to buy anything else.

The Astra blades are a nice upgrade to the Derbys that's came with it.

If you can find 5 more minutes that is all you need.

Also you don't even need to change razors. Hell keep using a cartridge if you want. But you are robbing yourself using canned stuff. It takes 90 seconds max to whip up enough lather to shave yourself 4 times

It was that or Merkur. Jagger is just so damned shiny that I went with it.

One problem...or a few...some like a more agressive razor. Some cant stand feather blades. New creams cone out daily. A badger hair brush is a little too soft for my tastes.

I rock a boar's hair with a cherry hand.

And I wanted to start my own. To ask my own questions and get replies. It went for 12 pages so, lighten up Frances.

Maybe we need a daily shave thread.

My morning shave consisted of the following

EJ with Astra blade
Proraso green
3 good lathered passes
A/S - Clubman

SO bought me the Paris aftershave cream from Bath and Body Works. Smells pretty good. I prefer after shave liquids though.

Takes me 8 minutes to shave. If you can't find 3 more minutes in your schedule, then you have a much tighter schedule than I do.

There are really good videos of this on YouTube. I use an antique shave mug that used to be in my great grandmother's house. It's basically a coffee mug with a slightly wider mouth. I'm going to buy a stainless bowl pretty soon, because bowls leave a little more room, and I have a giant hand.

But basically, run circles of your brush over the cream for 10-15 seconds (loading) then:
Mug: start rubbing your brush in the mug. If it's the consistency of toothpaste, dip the tip of your bristles in the water. Re-lather. Continue adding water in this fashion until your later rises. My ideal lather is a slightly waterier/more bubbly version of how Barbasol comes out of the can. You can, alternatively, scoop a few drops of water in your hand and drop them on in the mug.

You can also build a lather on your hand. You will be limited to dipping the brush instead of adding free water by hand.

You can also go from the cream straight to your face.
