I don't think OleWarSkul ever really served. He's an alter and a troll.

The current AF uniform, they call ABU, has almost no velcro on it - unlike our outgoing army utility uniform, the ACU which is practically made from velcro - to the extent that a large meeting of us mostly middle-aged field grade officers, we are all attached to each other in theater seating before the event is over.

But, in Afghanistan, they (the Air Force) used a uniform that was configured like the ACU (read "lots of velcro") just with a lot more brown/tan in the pattern. Heck, in Iraq, I saw airmen wear straight up ACUs (or FR ACUs).

It's those new frumpy looking uniforms that replaced the old BDU's we wore back in our time. I personally hate them and think they look like shite. Soldiers nowadays will never know what it's like to put on a crisp, squared away set of BDU's, squared away headgear, and a pair of spit polished boots. Instead they get those frumpy uniforms, suede boots, and silly looking berets. I sort of feel bad for them for missing out actually. The way they look now, we'd consider "ate the frick up" back in our day.

We had berets for years with BDUs, though Darth. One of my proudest moments as a company commander was my standing order for uniform:

"Sleeves down, unless we go up for a battalion formation. Head gear will be patrol cap. Beret will be carried, but only worn if required by battalion or higher formation."

And, we dropped the beret a couple of years back in ACUs - at least almost all local policy is no beret - except it is the head gear for Class A/B - but that's tolerable.

I know a lot of the black guys who went though with me at Ft. Knox got shaving profiles. Until I got there, I had no idea a lot of black dudes could not shave without totally eating their faces up. I remember seeing one black guy who had a solid field of pimples where his his beard would have been growing otherwise. Other guys bought this nair-like stuff and would sort of "shave" it off using a butter knife.

That's right. The berets came out right after I got out. I'm glad I missed out on that.

You are AF though right? Does the Army wear berets anymore (other than airborne units, rangers and special forces)

Loved my tanker boots. I had one pair to wear in the field and another to wear in garrison. I always wanted jungle boots but we were not allowed to wear them. Some of our support guys had them though and some wore jump boots. Do they even make all those different styles of boots now?

We were allowed to wear either. I always thought it was weird that people that never went to jump school wore jump boots.

I just wore my regular boots because they fit so damn well. Cold as frick in the winter though.

no not really, they have hot and cold weather boots. but as far "tanker" or "jump" no. Most guys now buy a good pair. I own a pair of nike boots, amazing. but other companies make an AR 670-1 approved boot.

That's the stuff. They'd wet it and make this sort of paste then rub it on their face and scrape it off with a butter knife. I remember the first time I walked in the latrine and saw a dude doing this I was like "what the hell are you doing?". It worked for some of the black dudes but for others even that would leave them with razor burn on a scale that's hard to imagine.

I always thought the same thing as well. And if anyone tried wearing tanker boots who was not actually a 19K, the first Sargent would eat them alive.
