That's what I meant by tacky. Big, gaudy letters contrasting colors on the monogram can be "tacky" looking. A white shirt with a white monogram on the pocket looks good to me. You have to look for it to notice.

And I agree with an earlier post that this isn't for wearing a tie and a suit (at least for me). It would be for a button down and slacks. I can see how it comes off as "look at me, I spent more on my shirts than you". But, if you live your life worrying about what other people think about what you spend your money on, you'll never buy anything.

I think it might be a southern thing in general. I also think it happens other places, just not in your circle.
