I think you are really overestimating how popular the Rockets are to the average Houston resident. Attendance for the rockets has never been spectacular, even this year having their best season in years they still finished 14th in attendance. I'm a huge Rockets fan and It's never made sense to me because the Rockets are the only team of sports that matter to win a championship, but that's the way it's always been.

Houston is very much a football first town by a very wide margin.

I would think women in other states would know Harden more. His beard/commericals have more national appeal to non-sports watchers

I have Rockets season tickets, so my circle is full of NBA fans...The answer for most of them would still be JJ Watt. One of the loudest roars at a Rockets regular season game last year was when they introduced JJ Watt.

In Houston, I'd say Harden has the same popularity level that Andre Johnson had...maybe a tad bit more. JJ's is on a whole different level. His popularity breaks racial barriers and brings peace to the people of Houston.

I just asked my wife "who's James Harden?" "uhhhh kinda sounds familiar??"

"Who's JJ Watt?" "Texans player that likes HEB."

She is most definitely an average Houston resident with regards to sports.

Umm I would say it is neck and neck. Not sure why people are laughing. Football is a more popular sport, but the individual marketing is 20x as big in basketball

It's JJ as a non Houston fan living in Houston. He's on everything

Harden and the beard are huge though. Closer than people think

That Means nothing.

Top basketball players are much more popular than top football players. The sport does not equate popularity of the star.

Watt is a self promoting media whore so that may factor into this.

That's probably the biggest difference. He's on the HEB and local Ford commercials

It is very close. Football is more popular, but the top players in basketball are always marketed individually waaaaay more than an NFL player. NBA is a player driven league, the NFL isnt

Not even Boom would argue that Harden is the best NBA player, and he's as big a homer as they come.

No doubt. There is not one person in Houston who doesn't know exactly who JJ Watt is.

Hint it's Drew Brees
