No reason to misspell words any more with the little red lines showing up. I'd take ten points off too.

That's racist.

people, and that includes middle school kids, have to accept that people are going to judge them. they will be judged when they try to get a job. they will be judged when they try to get into a college. on and on. when they go for a promotion.
You are ALWAYS going to be compared to the competition.

What's amazing is that the parent got on TD to complain about it. Parent has not accepted the realities of our culture.

There are some petty people out there. Spelling and basic grammar tells more about attention to detail. To reject someone for failing to use some specific writing style rules, that have very little to do with the job, is asinine.

Um so you type everything you write? Everything? I don't want to live in a shitty society where no one can spell and everyone is dependent on spell check.
I'm just saying that the teacher took an unnecessarily harsh stance on something that is becoming less important.

And I laugh at you for not knowing the difference between than and then.

FYI, than is used to compare two or more things and then is a particular time or a time after which something occurred.

By the end of the school year he's going to have both excellent spelling and proof reading skills. Imo, the 10 points is extreme, however it'll make him a better student in the long run.

I don't have kids past K yet, so I'm surprised to see that kids are still hand writing papers. Glad to see that is still happening.

The OP gave very little information. You have no idea whether it is harsh if the purpose of this assignment was for a spelling or English class. You have no idea whether it was typed and therefore subject to spell check.

But the kid is in 7th grade. He's not just learning the alphabet. Like other people have said, correct spelling or grammar can show attention to detail or just basic understanding of the language we all speak.

This should be a lesson for the kid. Proofread the paper next time. Learn that lesson now and you are unlikely to be the guy who puts up a billboard that says "pubic" schools because you didn't realize the L was missing.

I don't ever tell a child the teacher is unfair or wrong unless the situation is terribly extreme and to a point at which I might consider removing the child from the class. That's extreme. Even if I agree with the child, I keep that to myself and even if I planned to go to the teacher for further explanation. I don't want the child to start out in life coming up with excuses.

I actually do, but I won't stop you from trying to convince everyone and yourself that you're smarter than you are.

Exactly. Everytime I have to go through resumés or cover letters, if there is a punctuation or a spelling error then you're axed right there. I also work in a field where that's important though.

If it is a writing/english class then i'm all for it. It will teach the student to not overlook errors in the future, that's if they give a frick of course.

Going to the principal is likely your worst move, especially since it wasn't in a pass/fail scenario. Nobody likes 'that' parent.

I don't have to convince anyone how smart I am, particularly nameless faceless trolls on the internet.

It's a reasonable stance to think that spelling is incredibly important, but a letter grade per mistake is too harsh. "Itroduced" is a lazy mistake though.

Total points per semester matters too. Is this a 90/100 and there's 1,000 points in the whole semester? Or is this August rude-awakening counting toward a tiny fraction of his final grade? That could be the intention of the teacher.

Even in our profane little community here, posts with terrible spelling and grammar are mocked regardless of the content. On the Rant tonight, it was hard to consider the opinion of the guy who had "Good are bad?" in his subject line. That's a letter grade and a downvote.

My boy has never made less than an A in school. You're a fool for assuming he's illiterate. It's a big leap from one misspelled words to being an illiterate simpleton.
