While visiting with my cousin, she told how her dad tried to enlist in the army when the was started. They turned him down because he was one year older than the limit. She said the her mam of family was furious with hm because he would have to leave his wife and kids. She said he waited a month and went to a different recruiter. This time he lied about his age and was accepted. He fought the Japanese in the pacific. She showed me a lot of pictures he sent home while there. He ran into a few problems when it was time to draw his social security because they had his birth date wrong. They had to get old records to prove his age.

One of my few regrets in my life is that i didn't sit and talk with my grandfathers more and learn about their war experiences. My older grandfather passed when I was in my selfish early 20's and the other had alzheimers real bad by the time I realized that I wanted to learn about it.

It's highly doubtful that it's the same Fritz, but then man was a true Gentleman in every sense of the word.
I could see him doing it though.

Yes, unlikely. I enjoy hearing tales of this generation. My grandfather was in the Bulge, but we never talked about it. He passed when I was much younger.
For book readers, there is a footnote towards the end of "Unbroken" that tells of an encounter a USAF pilot had with a Jap pilot. US pilot ejects and while parachuting, and a Jap pilot flies straight at him. Certain he was about to be strafed, but the Jap salutes him and flies off. The two connected after the war and became dear friends.

I remember during grandparents day at my school (mid-90's), almost everybody's grandfather was a WWII vet.
Yeah, I remember the same. I'm only 23 and both my grandfathers were WWII vets and both are passed now.
