There were many families that were under strain, or even torn apart, by one or more family member joining his church and then telling their relatives they were all going to hell.
Catholics were particularly targeted by Swaggart followers. Quite a few Catholics switched to his church and would just rail on their old Catholic friends. I remember having heated discussions with some Swag converts as we rode the bus together on the way to Catholic High.

Yeah...that's what I am most surprised about. Like why come here all the way from Cali, after everything had hit the fan?? Very odd.
I was probably 10 or 12 years old when I saw the guy in line at Picadilly on Essen. I must have recognized him from the news reports. This was around the time the details of his extra curricular activities had come out. The hookers had been interviewed on TV, etc.
I wasn't really sure who he was, so I asked my mom if that was someone famous.
She said "That's Jimmy Swaggart...don't touch anything he touches." It was a joke, but I am pretty sure it was just loud enough for him to hear it.

Back in the 80's, before Swag's Great Failure, when they were first building the Swag empire, it was very common to run into his followers. They were very brash back in those days - really in your face. They would preach outside of Tigerland bars at night and were daily speakers at Free Speech Alley on LSU's campus.
His empire was massive. He had syndication deals all over the world.
I imagine there were a lot of people associated with that place all over town in those days.

I don't think I've ever met one. I didn't really move to Baton Rouge until the late 1990s though.

Did the Uber driver know anyone that knew Barry Seal?

I've got a story about how one of their daughters went from being a hard drinking hard screwing conservative to this weird crunchy granola type who only eats fruit and supports BLM and antifa.
On second thought, that was the story.
My penis drove her to become a liberal.

2 weeks ago in Houston. My Uber driver had a couple books in the seat and I asked if he was going to school. He said yes for ministry and he hoped to move to Baton Rouge soon. It was JS Ministry's book

I was only ten when Swaggart did his "I've sinned against you Gawwwddd" act, so I may have met JS followers in the past but none that certainly would have admitted it after that.
Besides, I'm more of a Jimmy Lee Farnsworth follower.
"DEMONS! OOUUUTTTT!"

Get picked up by my Uber driver and notice he's not that familiar with the streets here in BR, so I ask where he's from. (He looks about mid-20s.) Says he's from Cali originally, but that his family moved here about 15 yrs ago "for a change in lifestyle." I was like, "Oh really? In what way?" I was curious at this point...Then he was like "Yeah, you know Jimmy Swaggart? My family followed him here." And that was all he said.
I know I know CSB ...But really, in all my years of living in BR, knowing ppl from various schools, meeting lots of ppl in my LSU days etc, never in my life have I met a JS follower. It felt like a moment. FWIW, he was playing Drake in the car, so he's not completely out of touch.
Anyone else have a JS follower story?
How do you know he's a follower? You said he's in his 20s and family moved here 15 years ago for JS. So parents are/were in the church.

I havent, but I have seen one of their services on TV briefly while flipping channels and they had a bunch of tearful gospel and ppl falling out and speaking in tongues.
