Always get 2nd opinion if first guy tells you that you need a new system. Big companies always want to vhange out the whole system to make the revenue even if you don't need it. Bad capacitors are a very common problem. They only last about 2-3 years!!!

FYI, no matter what name you buy, all of the units now days are made by like 3 or 4 manufacturers. They are all essentially the same.

Are Tranes still top of the line these days? I'm looking to replace mine within the next year. I had a quote to replace my 3.5 ton and outside unit for roughly 10k with a Trane. Another quoted me close to the same for a Bryant unit. Also extra cost for switching the heating from electric to gas.

Whatever you guys do, when converting a freon 22 system to freon 410, make sure the ac guy flushes the lines out properly or installs a new refrigeration line set. You don't wNt the mineral oils of the 2 freons to mix.

Call Carl at Southeast Heating and Air. he is the most honest AC guy in the city and the most reasonably priced. You will thank me.

I can't find it now but there's a repair cost by brand graph and Trane wasn't bad if I remember correctly. Of course the Carrier/Bryant guys will tell you Trane is shite and vice versa.

I bought a 2.0 ton Seer 13 unit last year for about $3800, so your price for a 3.5 ton Seer 14 unit sounds pretty reasonable.

budgetheating.com

Had a quote for 6k. Bought the unit from the above website and found a handyman to install. Inside and outside unit...
No duct work needed and it ended up costing me 2800 for everything. That was 7 years ago and haven't had any problems

that's worth a few bucks right there, don't know why that business attracts so many methheads but that seems rampant, I've had a lot of things stolen by different HVAC guys, had to keep hiring guys to complete work form them not showing up, finally found the most honest guy in my area, if he doesn't answer the phone, he returns the call within minutes, will come out after hours or on weekends if necessary, I don't even ask about the price anymore, and he's gotten a referral or two from me as a result of his honesty and good work
