My wife works at the VA hospital in New Orleans. Less than half of their patient rooms are occupied

Did the VA start admitting non veterans yet? If not then that's not particularly informative one way or the other.

Is there anything in New Orleans not on the verge of systemic collapse?

My buddy works at the VA. Not that busy. Touro, UMC, Ochsner main are another story

My wife is working her first shift in the covid ICU at ocshner main tonight. Probably won’t talk to her until tomorrow afternoon but I’ll know how bad it really is in there then. One of her friends was working the day shift today and just told her it was pretty busy and new patients steadily being admitted.

Touro was busy last night, not horrible though. Crazy.

I really do think that these frickers wrote this article based on facebook posts.
One of those posts is straight from a fb post by a friend who just so happens to be an ER doc in NOLA.
And, yes, they did change his name.
Is this world slap full of lying pieces of shits? When did everybody become a used car salesman?

You'll learn to want to spell Ochsner correctly.

Total bed count is not the primary problem. The primary problems are staff availability, ICU bed space, and Isolation bed space.
As far as ICU and Iso rooms, those are already near-capacity, with 80-85% utilization in Region 1 (basically metro NO) as of yesterday, with an expected surge in cases hitting in 1 week.
Vent count looks a little less grim, mostly because the count includes portable/emergency vents (1100 available) as well as in-house/standard vents (900).
The big rate-limiter is personnel, which you can't retool a plant and manufacture. In previous disasters, we could get help from out of state. Now, every health system nationwide is going to be holding on to their doctors, nurses, CNAs, respiratory therapists, EMS/Paramedics, etc. There's no reserve pool, and most smaller hospitals already depend on PRN staffers who also work at the big hospitals. That's a huge reason the clinic folks are pitching a fit about PPE - not only because this virus is nasty, but because if they go down for 2-4 weeks, there are no backups on the bench.

Now that the tourists have gone home, COVID-19 has found a fertile breeding ground in Louisiana’s population, which includes the sickest and poorest people in the nation. Heart disease, respiratory conditions, physical disability, diabetes, and obesity—all risk factors for death from COVID-19—are more prevalent in Louisiana than in other parts of the country.
All these people who treat their bodies like garbage disposals and haven't seen a gym in decades are learning the hard way that natural selection is real.

Nola area hospital ICUs are overwhelmed. It’s only getting worse.
