Hilton Times Square is usually around $200/night. Just got back from it and its a solid hotel. Nothing special but good sized rooms for NY and there is a subway stop 100 feet from the front door that has access to a ton of subway lines. I don't think we ever had to go to another subway access to get somewhere.
ETA: Just looked and it has access to ACE, NQR, S, 123, & 7.

Do not stay in Times Sqaure. Yes, go visit it of course. But DO NOT STAY THERE. You will be miserable having to fight that crowd to get everywhere when you go outside

4 star hotel on Hotwire for $160/night a few weeks ago in Times Square. Hotels was chosen random through. Figured with a 4 star option, it couldn't be too bad and it wasn't.

Join Jetsetter. They usually have some deals on good hotels. I agree with another poster- Times Sq. is for first timers. Crazy crowded and not at all what NY is about. I guess if you are doing a lot of Broadway shows, its ok. Check around a little first.

Went to NYC to propose to my fiance. Used Vacation rentals by Owner
we rented a small flat for the week in the Upper East Side. Cheaper than the hotels and a stop for the express 6 train was at our doorstep. It was an awesome experience.
Lots of different prices and units

I stayed at the Renaissance Times Square a little over a year ago for $190/night over a weekend. I already had another hotel booked just in case for around the same price, but saw this deal on Marriott's promotions online and booked it. I think it was an advance purchase rate, but it was still pretty solid. Over $100 off the regular rates.
With that being said... even though I got an awesome deal and hotel was really nice, I would follow this guys advice...
Times Square just wasn't worth it. I will stay elsewhere, even for the same price, next time I go. You can take the subway everywhere and Times Square is dirty and crowded and not enjoyable IMO.
