I have been going to Destin about 2 or 3 times a year on average since 1985 because I have a good friend who owns properties there. . It is certainly more crowded than it has ever been and the traffic gets worse all the time (although Hwy 98 is being widened in some places). .... I would not say that the food is getting worse; in fact I can name more good restaurants now than there were decades ago. Enough good restaurants can be found. It is just that there are so many bad ones around there you have to know how to avoid the tourist traps.

What was it like during the 1960s?

I noticed that as well, but I'm pretty sure it is like that because of all the Trump bucks floating around paying people to not work (on the books).

Orange Beach stepped their game up

I don’t know man. Was always sheltered in that the in-laws would get a nice place in perdido key. Like 15 years of same trek that way to do the same ole same ole. This year cause of corona etc we got stuck at some joint in orange beach. White trash galore. Like shite hole lol. I was good with it, cause Let’s face it, I’m from north la. so no biggie. But anyone dropping that coin should head East.

We went to 30a from about 2005-2011 and stayed iat WaterColor, Seaside, Seagrove, and Rosemary over those years. It started to get to crowded around 2010 and moved on.
We toggle between Anna Maria Island and Sanibel/Captiva in alternating years. I think Sanibel and Captiva is to far and has to much of a yankee vibe to be a hotspot for people from the South.
Unfortunately, I think that Anna Maria, Holmes Beach, Bradenton Beach, Longboat Key , Siesta Key, Boca Grande stretch just north of Sarasota is the next migration area for the people who are sick of 30A crowds and changing visitor demographics.
I wish it weren’t the case because it has been my secret destination for 9 years.

Been trending this way for ~10 yrs now. We sold our property that we’ve owned since 1983 a few years ago. Still very exclusive but the hassle began to outweigh the serenity. We found our new “Destin of old” down the way. Not advertised and no stickers.

Awesome. We used to stay at place called Jack Tar and later Riviera on the Gulf that had a motel and cottages. We always stayed in the cottages. There was nothing for miles around until Holiday Inn built a hotel around 1970. There was literally nothing from the Riviera to Panama City other than a place called the Spyglass Inn.

Their tats don't affect me at all so I don't care. The cigarettes are a different matter. It smells gross and walking on butts is disgusting.

You sound like an a-hole.

Boca Grande is not north of Sarasota. In fact Boca Grande and Sanibel/ Captiva Island are both in Lee County.

We saw a big change in Destin beachgoers during and after the Deepwater Horizon spill. The condos lowered their rates and the trash took advantage. We gave up on what was our regular rental place because it hadn’t been the same since.

My in-laws have a condo in Destin but we quit going years ago. Just got tired of the drive from Houston, the traffic, and the overcrowding. However I had no clue the rif-raff have taken over. We have been driving down to Port Aransas. Although the beaches are not even in the same stratosphere as Destin and there really is no golf, it is close and the fishing is off the hook.
On a side note, I wonder with Destin getting all the hype, does Fort Walton fly under the radar?

Boo hoo. In this day and age, it makes me chuckle that people are still so bothered by tattoos
I stay on the beach several months out of the year, seeing less tattoos on younger people the last couple of years, lots of tattoo shops closed down, just another dying fad.
