check out priceline's name your own price if you are flexible on when you can fly .

check out airbnb.com if you're willing to stay in someone's apartment instead of a hotel room.

I also suggest staying at Marriott Marquis. It's in Times Square.

I can actually appreciate that, but he seems to want to stay in a touristy area. But since my father lives in midtown - Turtle Bay - I know that there's actually lots of authentic NYC places left in midtown. It can be lots of fun!

yea but for a tourist, staying close to midtown makes the most sense as you can walk to most attractions from your hotel

hoyt check out hotels in hells kitchen, it's a few blocks from times square so it will be quieter, but it's still an easy walk. plenty of restaurants and bars in that area too

The Marriott Marquis is a bit pricey. Look into the Bryant Park Hotel. About two blocks off of Times Square and central to everything Manhattan. Plus, Bryant Park (the park) is pretty friggin awesome.

Thanks for all the tips. What are dangerous areas of the city? Prone to violence and drug activity?

in manhattan you're pretty much safe everywhere. once you start going north into the bronx is where it gets sketchy

East Harlem late at night. I wouldn't wander around the outer boroughs late unless you know where you're going. Any area with a tourist draw is fine. You should be more concerned about scammers/pickpockets if you scream tourist

Bump? What kind of answer is that and how does that address the question? There are lots of hotels in the Times Square area but beware prices can range all over the place. If you go to cheap it can be a flea bag. Marriot Marquis, Residence Inn just down the street from my office.

and yes we noticed Timed

I stayed at a Doubletree in Time Square a few years back for work. The novelty of it was cool for the 2 nights I was there, but I would think there are probably much better locations to stay in NYC for longer periods of time.

Economical? Lol. I'm going in April and can't get nothing less that $1500 for 4 nights. Of course, I refuse to stay in a shite hole too.

Yep. I work in midtown (6th avenue, right by Radio City). Once you get off of the main drag, you can find some decent places. While it's not my favorite area of the city, I never quite got the hate for midtown.

Times Square is too expensive though when you can stay a dozen blocks away for 50% less.

bullshite. And then all the tourist stuff he actually wants to do is made up in cab fares, etc.

NYC is expensive tourist trap. It is what it is. I have a friend that everytime he goes he stays in some flea bag Motel 8 in Greenwich Village. frick that.

There is no hell on earth that I'd want to go to less than the Newark airport. Place sucks, smells, and is a nightmare in general. I'm not a fan of JFK or La Guardia either, but they are still better than Newark. It consistently gets terrible traveler reviews as well.
