I went to the office for almost 5 years. Left it because you can't beat the money in the field.

What's your major?
If PE, then you could very well get a nice production/ops or reservoir (not likely) job out of college.

So you prob make bank, we don't know each other and I won't judge you
What did you make last year drilling?
I'm offshore production and finishing the petro services program at Nicholls and I don't know if I want to stay in production or head to drilling.

It is industrial, may go back for the PETE after working for a few years. Already have a decent amount of experience, mostly top side though.
RedStick yea I know the $ is in the field which is why I will be headed that way, hoping to make it overseas, will prob stay in the field closer to 5 years now that I think about it. Unless I get tied down with a women.

I have a college education and have my own company for years. Can I expect to start at roustabout? Thats cool, just need to know where to start?
you are in your 40's, college educated, & have owned your own business....Im not sure you realize how humbling becoming a roustabout would be, not to mention the trash you are going to work alongside.

Last year was a good year. I made $269k and some change.
I won't make near that this year because work is slower and I voluntarily took more time off.
I did the same program at Nicholls. Graduated and went to work for BHI in MWD. I wanted to go directional because of my drilling experience. They made me go into MWD. I ended up being their tech support for every MWD/LWD/RSS and surface system they have over in West Africa after 5 years with them.
I prefer making money these days and living where I want.
I was an applications engineer for them in Houston when I made the jump to directional. I went out on day 1 as a lead DD.

Well I can tell you now you dont want to go rough neck, even with the new automated rigs it is still rough on you. Not sure what your education is but MWD/LWD is a shot but will say that in that last year the amount of people trying to do exactly what you are doing has sky rocketed. I work for BHI and was talking to the recruiter about how he literally has a desk stacked with resumes and applications. Best of luck to ya bud, not trying to discourage you just giving a heads up that it might not be that easy to jump into.

If it wouldn't be for working with complete shitbags, there wouldn't be many truly bad jobs on this planet.

I now agree. That's one reason I started this thread. I didn't know and wanted to figure out where to start. This thread has been very helpful.

That's what I was hinting at earlier. People still believe there is a huge push to hire people but that is far from the truth. Most places have on hiring freezes.
Every company out there is preparing for a rough year in revenues because of the natural gas prices. Experienced hands in natural gas fields are taking all the spots in active oil fields.
Unless you know someone and have experience, it won't be easy to get on right now.
BHI just released their recent revenues. It was below expectations by around 40%.
Things likely won't get better until we have a different president.

Yea its going to be real tough. to get a job that you would be satisfied with. Going from being your own boss to having a company man or tool pusher telling you what to do is going to be quite a feat to get over imho. I know it would for me, I dont like it as it is and I have never had my own company.

This is true, between college and my first job I took a temporary job where I was taking orders from some uneducated people, that shite ate me up but I felt it was better than not doing anything. I can't imagine how much harder that would be for the OP.

It was easy to make that money last year because I was home every night. Drilling was active in Colorado.
That area is in survival mode right now.

Is the best way to start just knocking on doors? Do companies do the training?
It's always best if you know someone but I would get online and fill out as many apps as possible. Lots of companies won't even talk to you unless you apply online now.
As for training, yes they will. Experience always helps but it's usually not a deal breaker. I know a few guys straight out of LSU with no oilfield experience that went straight into MWD.
I've been working in the oilfield for about 8 years. I'm considering going into MWD but only bc I know someone in the field. Knowing someone is really the best way getting your foot in the door. MWD hands start out around $120,000 a year. I'm sure there are other posters on here that could tell you more.

Don't k ow if this has already been posted bc I don't feel like going through all pages.
Get into the Right of Way business, I started at 225 a day with no experience add in the per diem and all the other money they toss at you and your well over six figures. I've been doing it for over a year and have went from the 225 a day to 300 a day. Kansas, Texas, eastern oh and western Pa all booming right now in need of Land Agents.

Good info. So is there a place to make the jump?
Posted on 2/1/13 at 8:55 pm to Vol Fan in the Bayou
For what position? You best shot at any of them is starting off by saying I have no problem moving to ND or doing 30 and 30 in Africa.
