The one thing I wish cyclists did was call out more of our own.

I know my group talked about it a lot when it happened. The story went out on the Facebook page, and just about every one of us spoke about it. The guys that ride the Trace with me all mentioned it, especially when we got to that area.

Are there some like that, yes. But, not all. Certainly not me in regards to what happened today.

I didn't say all. I think all this boils down to a miscommunication.

This situations sucks for all involved, no sense making it worse going back and forth on here.

A City of Atlanta firefighter was killed Friday afternoon while training for a triathlon in New Orleans.
Sgt. Frank Guinn was riding his bicycle with two others, including his brother-in-law, when he was struck by a car, Janet Ward, spokeswoman for the Atlanta fire department, said Friday night. Guinn died at the scene of the wreck, which critically injured his brother-in-law, Ward said. The third cyclist was not injured.
Guinn, a nine-year veteran of the department, is survived by a wife and three daughters.

Man, I ended up having some mutual friends with this guy and someone texted me his Facebook page with pics of his triplets....as the father of a 5 year old, it's crushing.

Agree. Further it is my belief that cyclists, motor or not and pedestrians always have the right of way. I am not going to be responsible for injuring or killing either, whether they are obeying the law or not. Should be common sense.

Damn. Hope this increases awareness. If this is an event NOLA wants to host it should be a priority to make this route safer for these guys.

Besides the massholes fricking traffic up once a month in Houston.....the only real biker thing that annoys me is when you're on a road with a bunch of stop lights, you pass a guy up, only to get to a stop light, have the guy pass you up again then you have to repeat the process over a time or two until you get through a light that stays green long enough.

Fwiw, the route tomorrow will most likely have a lane blocked off as well as police and SAG wagons. That pretty typical for an event like this.

To be fair, on Sunday during the race the entire course is closed to traffic, except for some local traffic on Haynes and even then one lane is for traffic (coned off) and one is for cyclists.

During the "strongly encouraged" athlete briefing today during packet pickup, they strongly urged riders to not ride the course ahead of time. My guess is next year, these athlete briefings will go back o being mandatory. I also think they should be accessible for participants who want to know where to train and have questions.

Yeah, that's a dick move. Urban riding is a different animal. I fricking hate it, but I do not ride as a mode of transportation or to commute, I do it for exercise and to train for races so I want far far away from lights and stop signs.

Fair enough. It would still be nice to know this type of thing is going on. I had know clue they did this in that area.

Id rather ride Chef than lakeshore drive. I went out there one time for Worlds to watch a guy from the peloton ride, and talk about dangerous. I wish there were better places to ride in South Louisiana. Your choice are really the levee or the Trace. The levee can get very crowded, and the Trace can get full of moms pushing strollers at certain times. It's a pretty mixed use trail, albeit a really nice one.

the Tour de Cure a few years ago

shite, people get killed here by motorists during events like tour de tucson with massive police presence and closed roads.

this year's tour de mesa, an idiot motorist ran into a cyclist.

last year's valley of the sun road race (the pro race), a cyclist went through a windshield because a driver plowed through the field.

last year's tour de scottsdale, a local brain surgeon was killed by an idiot who hit him, left the scene, and then lied about what happened.

and we lost a promising young triathlete named sally meyerhoff a few years to an inattentive motorist.

there are idiots on the road who are inattentive and put EVERYONE at risk. that's how this has to be framed. not cyclists vs motorists. inattention, especially in an auto, kills other motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians.

Kimberly Guinn lost her husband and the love of her life in an accident. They have 7-year-old triplet girls who worshipped their daddy. Kim is a teacher and Frank was a firefighter. No jobs better fit two people. Frank and Kim are the people I could call any time night or day, and they would be there to help, no questions asked. They are two of the kindest, most generous people I have ever known, and it was perfectly fitting that they chose occupations serving the public. This will be a heavy load for Kim to carry alone, and my goal is to raise enough money to pay for the funeral and give her a financial cushion now that she is a single mom. Putting 3 girls through college at the same time is going to require nothing short of a miracle. Anything helps!

They just showed the scene on WWL. Wtf are cyclist thinking riding that route? There's very little shoulder and very little land in general if you had to get off the road. They showed cyclist riding by about 2ft in the right lane. What a dumb and easily preventable way to die. Just sad.

Their defense has always been that they have the right to do it. Seems like a risky and senseless way to exercise your rights sometimes.

Isn't the picture of the shoulder in the OP the correct road? There's 4-5 feet for cyclists, a rumble strip (another foot), and a half foot before the white line. Then a car doesn't fill up the whole lane unless it's a wide body. That seems like plenty of space, and on pretty open country roads, how inattentive does one need to be to go over 3 feet, feel the jarring rumble, and not see the two 1.5'x5' foot profile of the cyclists?

Wasn't me, I worked a little and then went to the FQF.
It's a couple miles from my condo and I usually drive that stretch daily. I did the NOLA Half Ironman in 2011 and cycled that part of Chef Hwy regularly for a year or so. I jog it now when I get tired of running on cul-de-sacs in VI. I've biked alone or in small groups there and it gets me nervous trying to stay between the speeding vehicles and the rumble strips. In large groups it is a good place to train; we usually took over the whole right lane doing 20-22. There are faster groups that I couldn't keep up with.

It's a damn shame this happened.
Prayers to the athlete's family.
