I honestly don’t believe that was anything but short sided policy and ignorance. Which is really the legacy of the admin.
Edit: I do not believe Carter hated America and I believe he had good intentions. Had he been president in the 50s, maybe we’re having a different discussion. But his world didn’t exist anymore.

In terms of a human being or cultural differences? From what I understand, Ichiro was the exception, not the rule. It’s a very different culture and to some Americans probably seems snobbish.
None of his teammates seem to have bad things to say over two organizations.
