Hate to break it to you, but you are a frickin tard. If a dentist told you that if the pain gets worse than that means we worked on the wrong tooth...they shouldn't be practicing. Yes, they sometimes work on the wrong tooth, but not often. Many factors contribute to discomfort. Don't automagically assume it's the "one next to it" is the reason for the pain.

When you have a root canal, he removes the nerve. Period. It cannot hurt. Because it's gone.

So much fail in this post. Post op pain does happen after root canal procedures in a minority of cases. Often, some of the infected tissue is inadvertently passed to the tissues beyond the tip of the root causing a painful reaction. Antibiotics, pain meds and sometimes steroids are needed to get you through this difficult period.

If you continue to have pain, call the dentist. I'm sure he/she will be happy to speak to you or see you if need be.

Good luck.

I'm not a dentist but I've had one root canal and the relief after the anesthetic wore off made me glad I got the procedure done.

The whole point of the procedure is to eliminate the nerves ability to transmit pain.

I would go back for a checkup and make sure something is not amiss or there isn't another tooth nearby causing the issue.

Seriously call the dentist, and to get by till then , for you I would recommend topically applying Vagisil to the tooth .

Go see your dentist. I've never gotten or needed pain meds after a root canal and I've had multiples. RX ibuprofen is all I've ever used, if anything. Something isn't right if you're in pain.

What that one guy said. A root canal removes the nerve in a tooth. The pain should end as soon as the procedure was over.

Had two canals in one day and the pain wasn't that bad ... Took a Vicodin just for kicks since I'd never had serious pain medicine ...

This is it! If done correctly, there is nothing left in the tooth to feel pain.

I have had several root canals and never taken a pain pill.

I was prescribed vicodin after mine but I never took one.

Do you still have them? Asking for a friend.

I've had six and none have hurt badly after the nerve was properly removed. You should follow up with your dentist as soon as possible.

Yeah, I've had 3, and no pain afterwards...which was the point,I guess, of killing the nerve....Not saying it couldn't be caused by something else, but if it's getting worse, I'd be in his office ASAP.

All I had after my root canals was minor soreness. Doctor gave me no pain medicine. Said to just take ibuprofen and that was plenty good enough.

I don't know. I've had several but none of them ever were painful.

Call them and ask for pain Rx, tell them it's sore.

Take Lortab, drink = pain gone

I had a dentist break the drill bit off in my root once, they just left it and of course it got infected

My understanding was they aren't as painful as they used to be but I've never had one.
had one where they simply couldn't deadened the nerve enough and I tell you I had to gut out the worst pain of my life for a minute or two while they drilled out the bottom of the tooth. Will NEVER have a root canal again... just pull it!

You think it would be less painful to pull it while it wasn't completely numb?

I just had a permanent bridge installed yesterday. Thought it would be painless.

Boy was I wrong. Worst pain I have felt in a LONG time. Now my newly installed bridge is very sensitive to temperature (hot and cold).

Should I be worried?

Really depends on the level of infection before even starting the root canal. Keep taking those antibiotics but certainly call him/her if it'll ease your mind. About 10% of all root canals will have some postop pain. The vast majority are literally painless. Your immune system is getting the upper hand for the first time and sometimes over reacts and swelling/pain builds up the first 72 hours.

This happenened to me. Live nerve in the smaller canal. He just kept shooting novacaine into it as he went. Seemed to work.
