I'm not "into it"..I use a 35$ Merkur, cheap blades, barbasol from the dollar store, and 2$ pre shave from Walmart...
I shave every other day, and have not had issues in years..

Didn't mean that in an offensive way, even to those that are really into it. It's just you can get pretty deep into shaving accessories, lotions, creams, oils, etc. if you start to do some research. I love the videos that some have posted here of guys who just take it to the next level. I do the minimum amount that keeps me shaved without having my neck be on fire. It's working so far.

My point has always been that you don't need to..Some people are fine with a warm water and a sharp blade..

Taylor of old bond street - almond scent. Bought my first bowl of it in June of this year and probably have about a month or two left. Cost me $14.
At the same time I bought 50 platinum coated blades by feather for $14. I've used about half of them as each blade lasts a week.
For post shave I found some Dove men post shave balm at walmart.
Haven't had razor burn in 6 months and I have a better, cheaper shave than I could ever get with cheap shaving cream and expensive multiblade razor setups. The only status I was/am concerned with is that of my neck as I don't like seeing it covered in red bumps.

Here's my setup and process. A little prep time will make a world of difference.
First I soak my razor head (merkur 38c) in some rubbing alcohol while my mug, brush and rag soak in a sink full of hot water.
Then I'll do my hot rag for a few minutes.
When it's time to make my lather, I only use a tiny splash of water, along with a squirt of glycerin oil. I use Taylor of Old Bond Street Jermyn Street. Once my lather is good, I'll set it back in the sink with the hot water to keep the mug warm. Then I give myself another few minutes with the hot rag.
Then at that point I'm ready to go. A few splashes of Truefitt & Hill pre shave oil, and then lather up and shave. I use Astra platinum blades.
I'll do 3 passes... WG, XG, AG and then clean up some problem areas.
Then when I'm done I throw on some Nivea post shave balm.
You feel like a new man after all that... But the process is so worth it. Don't be afraid to take the time to treat yourself to a nice shave

Can of barbasol is like 2 dollars. Won't last more than a month. Price per month is equal to (possibly more than) the "expensive" stuff that I currently use. Any more suggestions for anyone?

Point is you could use peanut butter and get a good shave if you do it correctly...Whatever feels right for you

The point that most of the opposition has made is that you don't need that fancy "expensive" stuff to get a good shave. My point is that I'm paying the exact same amount per month as they are for cream and a fraction for the blades.

I have definitely paid a lot less than using replacement cartridge blades. You can get expensive with it if you want, but spending 20 bucks on cream isn't that much when it lasts most of the year.
I'm not poor by any means, but when I used to have to go buy another pack of mach 3 blades I cringed. I'd find myself using the same blade for a month, because I was too cheap to go buy more
. Hurt like hell to shave. I've probably spend $60 on everything I have and I'd say that will last me for at least six more months and I've been using it for 5 months.

Just to disinfect the blade.
I rinse it with water before using

Of all the things to leave out of a step by step guide, THAT'S the one you leave out, lol.

I got 100 blades for around $10 (I have a Merkur) and used one bladea week. It will take me almost two years to use those blades. TWO years....

My best combo is the Proraso cream
With the Personna Platinum Chrome
Like mentioned before, a good prep makes a big difference.
