You’re talking out in baggage claim or outside on a bench that smells like trashy cigarette smoke cause you ain’t spending the night inside the secure area. So trashy, and so poor.
I did it in 2017 in ATL. I walked all over that motherfricker afterhours.

They literally allow homeless people to sleep in the Atlanta airport

Disagree.
A nice shower and a couple hours of sleep in a comfortable bed, dark room cool AC is well worth the money
A hotel Fairfield Inn is usually like $80 a night anyway
I'll bite... I think you are wrong. Maybe if I had five hotel hours, but not three.
The $80 room is likely in a city with a 13-17% hotel tax, so let's call it $95. An Uber or taxi is more $$$ (both ways). Or maybe a shuttle? That's more time wasted en route to the hotel, and definitely they will want to leave for the airport earlier than really necessary, just to be safe.
I certainly wouldn't want to stink, which is why I mentioned the washcloth. When I do this, I also bring travel-deodorant and dental kit. And clean underwear, undershirt and socks. I recently did this in Seattle, coming from Asia. I found a family bathroom and locked the door and freshened up for 20-25 minutes. Felt great and smelled great too.. except for the jet-lag and exhaustion.
As far as A/C.. in the USA, the airports are typically cool, so not a major issue. And of course, no security lines in the morning on 1.5 hours of sleep.
You and I aren't THAT far apart... I just think three hours in a hotel for $95 is not worth it. I think five hours probably is.

Sounds miserable.
And, you are poor.
If I'm going to be there only 8 hours or so, screw paying for a hotel. I've stayed in SeaTac numerous times.
Poor people usually are poor because of shitty spending habits.

Huh? I've done it almost a dozen times this century.

Guarantee you it has not been post 9/11. Not in the US, or in an airport with flights bound for the US. Not legally that is.

Overnighting at an airport is a terrible idea

Before 9/11 I did it a lot. Vegas trip once we partied till 5 am and took an airport nap until our flight that morning. Went to NY and got a late checkout around 4pm on my last day, left my bags at the hotel desk, had dinner and hung out around the city till 2 am then headed to the airport for a nap before my 7am flight. Back then I was in college and it was a great way to save a little cash. Now days they don’t let you past security too much in advance to do it. I only tried it once since 9/11 on purpose and ended up having to sleep on the floor in a hall near baggage claim until they would let me in.

Would it matter to you if I were actually in my own sitting area? You sound like someone I would like to have kick my legs, while I was sleeping in the airport.

I guess I have been lucky.. in last ten years, I have overnighted Air-Side in Columbus (OH), Seattle, Atlanta, Honolulu and San Salvador (all on USA-bound flights "upcoming").
For the El Salvador overnight, we were screened again pre-flight, but we stayed air-side. Other times I have been Land-Side.

Coming back from my honeymoon we had a 13 hour layover at the airport in Doha, Quatar. It was 8 pm and I decided to ask the front desk if they could comp us a room in the airport since we had such a long layover. She said let me look into it. She came back and said sorry, since I bought discount flight tickets they couldn’t help me out. My wife and I already spent a small fortune for our honeymoon so we decided to rough it in the airport for 13 hours. Holy crap what a miserable night. All of the restaurants shutdown. I tried sleeping in a plastic looking uncomfortable chair only to be woken by an angry Arabic speaking man trying to buff the floors in that area. We eventually found a bench and tried sleeping but got zero quality sleep. Never again.

So, no arm was caused to anyone else?

Done it many times, especially on international flights where there was a 8-10 hour layover. The sofas in the terminals of some countries were obviously chosen to be comfortable when sleeping, but it seems like most of the seating in U.S. airports was chosen to discourage it.

If you’re way out at the end of concourse B where no gates are, go for it. I’m talking about the idiots at gate B5 in the middle of the afternoon rush, no places to sit and couyon sleeping with their neck pillow taking up 5 spots.

It’s called a departure lounge, not a rest area
