I have kids. It's fricking lazy. Be a damn parent and teach them how to interact politely in public without a flashing screen.

If they use headphones, I don't care. Just any noises from phones in general is pretty irking to me. Even when it quietly travels, it's super high pitched.

I want to crawl under the table and die if someone tries to show me a video with sound in public. I think it's so rude.

Had a family member that use to make fun of people on their phones at restaurants, make fun of parents that gave their kids phones/tablets at the table to keep the calm, always said my kids aren't getting phones until they are in HS and prove they are mature enough to handle.

If I recall correctly, his kids each had their own tablets for Christmas before they were 5 and they never left the house without them. He already purged his FB for those comments, but I like to remind him every now and then.

How’d your parents raise you?

Those same kids grow up and continue doing this well past ages 2-5

Right...So i get you like to generalize and think you know what you are talking about. But here's my experience with my young children.

I have a 4 and 7 year old. We allow them screen time during the week for a certain amount of time. If we are going out to a restaurant, depending on the restaurant, we allow them the phone to play games. No, we don't allow the volume to be loud because we are considerate people.

My 7 year old, who you just said will "continue doing this well past age 5", is more into reading now than video games.

I used to judge parents, before i had kids, that let their kids be on the phone or play games at a restaurant. But then i had kids. And sometimes, you just want some quiet, and the phone is a quick "shut them up" solution when we're getting pizza, or go to Chimes or somewhere like that. We don't give it to them all the time, but trust me, i think you'd rather silently judge 2 kids quietly entertaining themselves, than deal with 2 boys fighting over colors, and a 4 year old screaming how the 7 year old had "the good red color".

kids playing of phones is much less annoying that adults talking on the phone around me.

I have two. And they’ve leaned to be well behaved at restaurants without phones in their faces.

They are 6 and 2.

My kids are still at the age that I enjoy interacting with them, but they are also young enough that when overtired or really hungry that are miserable little shits. So, I have on occasion done the phone thing because the people around me didn't earn these trophies. But it has been rare occasions when we've had to do it, typically long road trips or long days at the playground

They shouldn’t take kids to any public gatherings that require decorum, until they’re old enough to sit quietly without the need to be entertained. Restaurants and churches for example.

Parades or other social gatherings where there is no need for refined behavior are acceptable. But then you’d have to be, well, a parent to make those types of decisions and many, many parents reject that responsibility.

I disagree somewhat, and I'm pretty anti-phone/iPad.

I fully agree that you should train your children to be able to go to public places and stay entertained by talking to their families, quietly playing with some non-electronic toy, etc.

But to do that stuff you've got to put them in those situations, IMO. I'm not suggesting doing that at a prime steakhouse, but a lot of restaurants and church services are welcoming and/or designed around kids and kids being kids.

you mean people who didn't have the the option of being lazy and handing the kid a flashing screen so they had to, you know, parent? yeah...they don't have any relevant experience and should sit this one out

I've seen a lot of kids at a lot of restaurants playing on phones over the years. Can't recall a single time that I thought "Wow, that's so loud that I really wish they'd just let them whine & cry instead of watching a video on that device that helps keep them entertained & quiet."

No one has kids that young that act perfectly in restaurants at all times. Why even say this lie?
