And now you are upset that younger people have more drive and other successful midlife people aren’t on your exact time schedule?
No, the people I’m referring to are much older than I am. And I also wouldn’t call it a midlife crisis. More of a took a look around and said wtf moment.

My father told me the worst thing you can ever be in life is average. My life experience has shown me that he was 100% correct.
Let me be clear though. The world needs average people to do average work. So may God bless you people that are only interested in punching a clock.

Just remember, you will never get into the $500k a year range without making it your life.
Simply not true. It has to be a big part of your life for some time, but not your entire life

Kind of the definition of a midlife crises.

Doesn’t that mean they aren’t on your same life schedule?
I’m beginning to understand why you are embracing mediocrity.

You are correct … but you can’t just clock out once you leave the office

I’m a blue collar guy and there’s times I wish I was more like them. I’ve left a lot of money on the table in my life. However I do well enough and my kid actually likes me so at the end of the day I guess I made the right choices.

I admittedly wanted to be one of these types in my early 20’s. However, currently at the age of 35, I’ve gotten to the point where I value time with my wife (no pics) and toddler children over chasing a buck for a shitty corporation.
THIS. I was there at about the same age. I am now fifty and have not put my name in for a new job or step up in ten years. Just said fuk it I am happy and make enough money and get plenty of time off in my job now. I don't need anything from anybody and that corporate lifestyle is not for me any longer. Just enjoying life and family and time off. Keeping it simple I call it.

I'm with you. I worked in the corporate world for 35 years. The last 4.5 yrs, I've worked solely for myself. I look back and see some much wasted time working that inefficient system. Be wary of people whose identity is totally dependent on what their position is or what their role is within the company. The reason is if that it's threatened, they will do anything to maintain that position or role because that's where they think their value lies. Guys, life is short. I still remember working offshore during the summer while in school. You marry, have a family go to work for a company, and it flies. Like the song says, you blink and your kids asking for the keys to your truck. A man's life is more than the abundance of his possessions. You won't regret building relationships with family. That's something money cannot buy. Beware of the corporate die hards however. Not demeaning hard work at all. It's what I've witnessed those types of folks do to others as they maintain their role in a company. It can get pretty downright evil.

You sound pretty similar to me. I do the best job that I can while I'm there, but I don't care about climbing the corporate ladder any further or adding much more stress or responsibility to my life
I'm good if that means I won't make as much money as I could.

I feel like I have to work as much as possible.
I'm a print/written media dinosaur trying to compete with new age media.

quote:YES! Coworker is the type to always try to 1up everyone. Is at retirement age now and brags he wants to work another 10 years.
Has anyone else gotten to a point in your career where these types annoy you?

Some people want to put their kids through college (and leave them something), don't want the mother of their children to work, and don’t want to have to live “where the schools are good”

Yes. I'm long over the work text messages during weekend and holiday mornings.

Yep same. I do my job the best i can but don't make me go out of my way because I wont. If you get some side eye when asking me a question that means, NO. I learned this from my guys a couple years back
Life is short and dammit I am not a slave to my job so I plan on "living life" and enjoying it.

One of my good buddies went down this rabbit hole some time ago.
Every time we get together and shoot the shite with the guys, he hijacks the conversation and talks about his job. It’s sad and annoying as frick.
