Today in Baton Rouge History
December 28, 1862
The Old State Capitol burned tonight in 1862. The Old State Capitol had been shelled by Union gunboats in May, 1862, but it was still usable as a camp for soldiers and sailors. Soldiers quartered in the old state capitol carelessly but unintentionally set the building on fire. As the ten-year-old structure burned, its flames lit up the waterfront. In the morning, the blackened walls of the proud structure were still standing, but the interior had been gutted. The dilapidated building would sit empty until 1879, when the legislature voted to return to Baton Rouge and appropriated funds to begin the process of restoring the building.

Construction of the Horace Wilkinson Bridge aka "New Bridge" in the early to mid 1960's. I don't think they envisioned what the future held.

Those 2 photos of Pontchartrain Beach sure brings back memories. One of my early jobs was working one of the game booths on the midway back in the mid 60's. Like most of the games on the midway, it was rigged. The milk bottle booth had 3 metal shaped milk bottles that were stacked 2 for a base and the 3rd resting atop the bottom two. One of the bottom bottles was about 3 times as heavy as the other two, and that made it much harder to knock the over for the prize.
It was hot as hell in the summer, but watching the gals go by made it tolerable for a horny teenager.
