They didn't see what happened before hand - they only saw what they responded to - a guy being physical with a girl.

Problem for him is that she disengaged and walked away, and he then pursued her. Makes it unlikely he can claim self-defense, because it wasn't. He would have been better off taking her down when she first attached him.
Most likely both would be charged with the same thing - assault and battery type charges - or nothing at all for either one.
