For some reason I thought he had the option to fight for the winning side before he turned his back on them and sided with Virginia.
I believe Lee was offered command of a Federal Army before he resigned his commission to enlist in the CSA. He was a very well respected officer. When John Brown raided the federal arsenal at Harper's Ferry, R.E. Lee was picked to lead a platoon of Marines to put down the uprising, even though he was an Army officer. It was thought that he would be capable of settling the standoff without violence. He left immediately, unarmed and in civilian clothes.
Robert E. Lee wasn't perfect, but he was a good man and a fine soldier.

This country was physically built off the backs of slaves and poor immigrants so this is their country.

I will literally fall on the floor laughing my arse off if that crane slides down that wooden ramp they built for it when they start lifting the monument.

I think both he and Grant were engineers also.

We were talking about Lincolns desire to settle the former slaves in the islands and South America.
No. You were talking about this as a point of saying the slaves had it better than it could be. An odd statement to make in the first place, but I amused myself.

He refused to wage war against Virginia, he didn't care about the rest of the South

Here we go again. Please link with sources how many millions of people the Confederates gassed, killed, and cremated. Thanks.
To complete your analogy, if the Jews wanted to put up a memorial to the Nazis they should be able to. It was a free country at some point.
you don't see the similarity to having a monument to praise a war General who fought a war to keep a lifestyle where they imprisoned another human life against their will and treated them like a piece of farm equipment could be compared to having a monument to praise a war General who imprisoned another life against their will and treated them like garbage?
quote:
Do me another favor. Can you graphically show me what symbols on these statues were used as propaganda by hate groups?
The statues themselves don't have any, but I honestly don't care if they stay up or go down...I just don't see what the fuss is either way. The confederate flag has become the symbol the hate groups have used and the statues and generals ended up being guilty by association. You leave them up one side views them as praising everything negative that the Civil War was about instead of a memorial for the war itself. You take them down the other side look at it as a removal of history and that Lee/Jackson weren't symbols of hate but a part of history, even though that history promoted slavery. So damned if you do damned if you don't.
quote:
Further, if these figures were used wholesale as figures of hate, then you should believe they need to be removed from history textbooks, no?
what they fought for was to keep the right to enslave another life, spin it however you like but when it comes down to it that is hate right there. but that doesn't mean it should be removed from history books or from being taught in schools. History is history and keeping/removing a meaningless statue won't change that nor should it change it.

Hard to tell but it looks like he has to reach a little more, don't forget they have to rig the statue also. Definitely cutting it close either way, just like the manlift.
