a lot of panhandlers are not homeless and are simply trying to scam people so they can get a tax free income. the ones that are aggressive over money and get pissed when you offer food are more likely the be scammers than actual homeless.
I think the scammer crowd is what ruins any sympathy one would have for other homeless folks who are truly down on their luck.
Case in point, my SO who works in law enforcement says that they bust a local man regularly for panhandling. Everytime they arrest him, he has thousands in cash and he had his own (old, beat up) vehicle. (which I believe he lived it)
I also have a hard time feeling for people who only want money for their abuse problems.
A man that I saw just a few days ago at an intersection had a cardboard sign that read "Just Money" while he held his 40oz. beer in the other hand all the while standing in the roadway stumbling over himself. I just can't seem to have any sympathy for those types and it ruins the public perception of the truly homeless people who really want the help.

My wife's best friend's fiance has told me several times that if it wasn't for his kid, he would prefer to be homeless. He doesn't like to work.
You had my interest until you said it's because he doesn't like to work. He's a lazy bum and /or is doing something he doesn't love. This may shock him, but being homeless isn't as easy as working. Give him a pair of shorts and a peanut and go drop his arse in the projects tonight. If he's still alive, ask him if he's ready to go bck to work.
Secondly, if my wife's best friend was marry a peice of shite who's desire was to be homeless, I would cut that friendship immediately.

That's where my pity ends.
Why bother then
Your pity doesn't feed a hungry person or provide a warm place to lay their head

He comes from a fricked up family and is a hippie poet. Good guy at heart. We formed an unlikely friendship bc we spent a lot of time together since my wife and his fiance have been best friends since Jr HS. Some people just aren't capable of conforming to society. I understand how it would be easy for people to think he was a POS though.

Ever thought it could have been mental illness or shitty family life/upbringing? Get off your fking high horse.

Also made me question why anyone would voluntarily subject themselves to that.
You're a funny dude if you don't believe they actually want to be in the situation they're in. There are choices to get out of that weather.
They chose not to take advantage of it.
Yep, kind of like when you chose to be a degenerate piece of prison trash.

The U.S. Population is roughly 300 million. Let's say you have 175 million adults in the U.S.
Mental illness. Schizophrenia affects about 1 % of the population worldwide. Therefore , you have about 2 million people living in this country with schizophrenia. These people hear voices, believe in hallucinations and delusions. They cannot truly take care if personal needs in most severe cases.
The state of Louisiana with about 2.5 million adults has around 25 thousand people affected by schizophrenia.
People with mental disorders need help. I do believe that some panhandlers make a living off of others. Mental health should be given more monetary consideration.

Yes, and when he says he'd rather be homeless than work, he means live all around in other peoples houses and places like that (ike a hippi)...you bet your arse he doesn't mean sitting on the sidewalk in 30 degree weather getting his arse beat daily.
Big difference

I used to work at a homeless food bank, and many of those homeless people genuinely want to be outside and sleeping on the street. They have many psychological disorders and just simply aren't interested in doing anything about them. Its definitely not just a lazy guy who doesnt want to work...takes a lot of factors.
