If I can't decide how my property is taxed before I buy it, why would I buy it?

Additionally, if I were already a property owner, why would I not just vote to shift all tax burden to non property owners?

As you already know, in short, this is a retarded and ridiculous idea

Not only are you short and fat, you're obviously a renting leech. Gross.

You sound like a xenophobic bigot. Everyone knows apartment dwellers know how real estate works. Sheesh.

Most property owners have no idea how real estate works.

Most people don't know how tax policy works

Most people don't know how bonds work.

Whats your point?

I’m pretty sure it was Thomas Jefferson who said that only property owners should be able to vote because if you allow those who don’t own property to vote, they will vote to take property away from those own do own property.

He was a visionary.

This Thomas Jefferson?
"Now as to the representative house, which ought to be so constructed as to answer that character truly: I was for extending the rights of suffrage (or in other words the rights of a citizen) to all who had a permanent intention of living in the country. Take what circumstances you please as evidence for this, either the having resided a certain time, or having a family, or having property, any or all of them. Whoever intends to live in a country must wish the country well, and has a natural right of assisting in the preservation of it".

This idea popped in my head after the “ Is it rude to ask someone if they’re a property owner??” thread.

Should proof of ownership of real property be a prerequisite prior to voting on various local and state property tax issues? Think about it, if you don’t own a home or acreage, why should you be allowed to vote on those matters - i.e., tax increase, where the tax funds are to be allocated, etc.

Your upvoters are stupid. EVERYONE who lives in that district is affected by property taxes, whether they rent or own the address listed on their voter registration.

Absolutely. I would go even further and say that property owners votes should be weighted differently.

That's not far enough, IMO.

If you don't own property, your vote is worth 1/4 of a normal vote.

If you're paying a mortgage on your house, 1/2 a vote.

If you own your house outright, your vote counts as one.

If you own a second house, you get 2 votes.

If you own a company that owns multiple homes, you get a vote for each single family residence and 1 vote for every 2 single family residents in an apartment complex.

Etc.

If we're going retarded, let's go full retard.

I will buy in on that. I pay a mortgage, so I only get half a vote. Then that means the bank is paying half of the property tax, right?

Is the owner of a double-wide really doing better than a guy who rents in a downtown skyrise? Some people just hate commuting.

This isn't an argument on either side of the bigger debate, but as someone who pays thousands a year into these, I consider them true entitlements, notwithstanding how miserably managed it is.

Pure living assistance and the more classic welfare subsidies and refundable credits should be considered in a different basket. Not for voting rights purposes, but for general discussion purposes.

I think the real question is why do you have to pay taxes on YOUR property.

Shrink the size of government and don’t pay property tax at all.
