Tyrone is a pretty common name for white South Africans, I know one who changed it when his family came to the US and one that kept it.

I have the same situation, and I can track my family's involvement in agriculture back to the 1920's, but not as major land owners.

But we made the list on the link earlier in the thread, and the location is the area of South Carolina from which I've been told that's where my family originated before moving to Arkansas, then to Mississippi...

So my ancestors were at some point either indentured servants and worked their way out of it, or their business went to shite and that's when they left South Carolina... Either are plausible, because my great grandfather was a hard working s.o.b., but not much of a business man.

Several large SC plantation owners bought and operated plantations out in Miss and Alabama. They sent SC boys to run them, and that may have been the genesis.

Yeah, possibly. I've been curious about all of this lately. Can anybody comment on how easy it is to track lineage within the 14 day free trial of ancestry.com?

I'm sure I would have to dive deeper than 14 free days if I were to deal with my mother's side, since she's adopted.

100% yes.

If you are really interested you can view the slave schedules for any slave owning family from 1790-1860 on the census.

The slaves are all listed by name and age. They only had a first name. After slavery ended at the end of the civil war, most slaves took the last name of their former owner. They had to do this for legal reasons as free people who could enter into contracts. You could not enter into a court recorded contract as "Lester."

Say the slave days were 6 generations ago.

That means the ancestor of that generation with your surname supplied 1/64th of your DNA.

There is a great chance you have more black ancestors in that generation than that.

You don't really think 5 or 6 generations ago all your ancestors had your last name do you?

Extremely easy if you know a little already. If you have living grandparents ask them everything. Where were they born. Where was their mom and dad born. Who were their grandparents, etc.. Get all you can of what they can pull from the depths of their memory.

You can do this also if your parents can tell you a good bit about your grandparents and their grandparents. Once you have a little momentum, it snowballs once you get to your great grandparent level as you have unknown relatives also citing yours as brothers and sisters, etc.

Ive recently found out that there are dozens of our slaves descendants that took our last name. One is a semi famous pro running back.

Intradesting. I was always told we owned 62 in that census but its actually 70 when you drill down. Not sure great great great Gramps ever got his citizenship back after the carpetbaggers got everything but the house. Filthy yanks.

Why would you give a shite if an ancestor owned slaves?

And why woul you restrict your concern to existence in this country? Worry more, or at least as much, about what your ancestors did in other countries on other continents. God man, have some remorse for all the misery your family has caused others throughout time!

You pig. I bet you're white.

It's virtually certain that you had ancestors who were slaves and other ancestors who owned slaves.

By virtually certain, I mean 99.9999%.

No reason not to put that last on your list of irrelevant shite to be concerned about.
