It either means you are black or your ancestors were slave owners.

A great website to use for free is the Mormon hosted site: familysearch.org

LINK

You do not have to be a member of their church to register and start a family tree. I'm not a member. You can do a hell of a lot using mostly census, marriage, death and birth records. I traced my family on both sides back to New Orleans before the Civil War.

I had no idea my ancestors were there that early so it was very cool to find this out.

Does this potentially mean my ancestors were slave owners?

Yep, most likely. My surname is not too common, several blacks in my area share my surname.

A cousin researched our family history and YES my ancestor was a slave owner.

Don't sweat it though man. That stuff happened well over 160 years ago. You had absolutely NOTHING to do with it.

Don't let this 'white guilt' crap trip you up.

I have however, done a good bit of research and have never found a single piece of evidence that any of my ancestors owned slaves.

I can state for a fact that my poor arse parents never owned slaves, except for their own progeny.

Must be Washington or Jefferson. I'm 65 years-old and I have never known a white person whose last name is Washington or Jefferson.
