Never go there unless you want to die from your illness. St. Tammany hospital is a short distance away and will help you stay alive.
I heard the same thing from a co-worker that lives in Robert, but he told me that about 10 yrs ago about North Oaks. Thought they may have gotten more competent by now but apparently not.

It's easy to get to Baton Rouge or New Orleans
But then you have to wonder why anyone would want to go to either?

North Oaks
I was born there and my son was born there.
I've had several outpatient procedures/surgeries from their network of physicians and have always received great care.

If the last time you was there was when Trey Yuen closed, then you don’t know hammond.
The downtown district is actually super nice and safe. Have several really top tier restaurants and the atmosphere is constantly getting better. 10 years I’d agree with you but now, now so much

Downtown is pretty neat, there’s plenty of events going on usually depending on the season. There’s hot August nights and starry November nights with some bbq and blues festivals sprinkled in. Some of my longtime favorite restaurants are Tommy’s Pizza on Thomas, Kirin sushi, Jacmel In, Tope la, Mariners, and Cate St seafood isn’t too bad either. Generally, I’ve never felt unsafe around downtown, the mall area, or around southeastern.

I went to SLU as did my wife. We moved back to get out of the greater BR area a year ago and couldn't be happier. PLENTY of great restaurants. A beautiful downtown area with some good plans for the future. The university provides entertainment from athletic events and arts. Live music a good bit of the time. Crime happens but it is typically contained to certain areas. Like mentioned earlier, the university has some very good programs. The education and nursing programs are top notch and business and kinesiology are both good as well. Downtown area is very nice but hard to find houses for sale if you are looking for something move in ready. Another nice area is out by Oak Knoll by the airport. Hammond High can be rough but it is now a magnet school and if you are in the magnet program you don't really associate with general population. St. Thomas is the catholic high school and deals with it's share of "private school problems" Overall, we have been very happy with our decision.

Thanks for this info. I really like the thought of having SLU there for low key athletics and of course the arts, which provides a vibrancy to the city. I bet a decent Saturday afternoon can be had at Strawberry Stadium just chilling out and enjoying it for what it is...obviously not Power 5 play of course.

idk why, but this made me chuckle. I guess being such a random, yet interesting, tidbit.

First thing is to learn how to pronounce it correctly....
Hammond, like in "hammint".

Football is not strong but SLU baseball is really good normally. Its the sport that we had when football was canceled during my time at SLU. LSU comes to Alumni field all the time. If you are into art and culture events, Fanfare is incredible. I have seen everything from student plays, to the Olympia Brass Band to the Russian Ballet right on SLU's campus. There is a also a great art exhibit hall on campus in one of the old libraries.

I always screw up Tangipahoa. I pronounce it with the "uh" on the end and my buddy constantly corrects me that you just pronounce it as a garden tool or...well, you know.

I appreciate you bringing this up because I've been spoiled with SOAC here in BR and of course the athletic fields. So I need to look into a good fitness area that offers all the extras of SOAC and will also look into the soccer program. Thanks again for reminding me. See, this is why the OT is the shite!
