My dad was at Madgeburg with the 482d AAA (SP) Battalion (halftracks with either 4 .50 cals or the 37mm with 2 - .50 cals) when the war ended...he was a replacement who turned 19 on the troop ship going over in March of 1945...worked his way through the replacement system and got to the unit just before the shooting stopped...
I had several uncles in the Army as well...

My father was in the navy, executive officer on an LST in the Pacific. Got a bronze star for shooting down a kamikazi that was trying to ram his boat. His younger brother was in the air corps, and shot down a couple of zeros and was transferred back to Texas to teach at flight school, where my grandmother was sure he would be safe for the rest of the war. Ironically, he got killed in a training accident. My dad would never talk much about what he did, but he sure hated the Japanese the rest of his life. My grandfather served in the infantry in WWI but I don't know any details about his service.

Grandfather: British Officer who served in the North Africa campaign. My dad (also English) is trying to find files based on his service because of some of the crazy reconnaissance missions that my grandfather's soldiers told my dad that he lead.
Great Uncle: My grandfather's uncle lied about his age to serve in WWI and served in the trenches. In WWII he was a British Airman and was shot down and captured by the Gestapo. He was tortured for weeks but was eventually rescued by members of the dutch resistance. He ended up marrying one of the women who was with the group that rescued him after the war.

SSG Charlie Melancon
1st Battalion, 319th Infantry Regiment, 78th Infantry Division (Lightning). Landed Feb 45 and stayed through the occupation late 46. Made E-6 in less than a year. Seldom spoke of the war.
I have his portrait from Berlin with mounted Combat Infantryman's badge framed on my fireplace mantle.
SGT Fred Wakefield
Played in the USAAF band as his eyesight was too bad for combat operations. He played six instruments and it would remain his hobby and playing with his Shriner band until he developed Parkinsons.
