Definitely turn in plate and then go ahead and do insurance. Just paid a 275.00 fine bc I didnt know you had to turn in the plate.

Hell it would've been cheaper for me to pay insurance every month to let it sit than pay the fine.

quote:

Who's got power of atty for mom? That person needs to go with your sister to the dealer to donate the car to the dealer aka trade it in. Once you get that signed and done, then drop insurance immediately or next day if buying car at night.

Mom is sadly deceased, so a power of atty isn't going to do any good at this point.

Sorry for your loss, OP.

Don't know if this will help significantly, but my insurance (USAA) offers a "storage" insurance option - essentially just bare minimum coverage as I understood it.

At very least, it will lower your next month(s) payment until tags can be traded in.

Definitely want to confirm details depending on whether the car is truly going to just be sitting there or not though. Wouldn't want to sacrifice significant value/usefulness down the road just to save a few dollars this month.

Sorry for your loss.

I just did this. Theres a statement of non use form you need to fill out on the DMV website. Then you have to turn your plates in at the DMV. You can go to the express locations to do this. Make sure they give you a receipt so if paperwork gets screwed up you don't get hit with that stupid arse insurance fine.

sorry for your loss. louisiana has a new procedure that allows you to cancel the plate online and destroy the plate. you no longer must go to the dmv to turn it in. cancel it and get confirmation before you drop insurance.
