I guess it is because I grew up in the area, but I have no idea what yall are talking about when you say the people are stand-offish. I don't want to sound like a dick, but maybe you need to look in the mirror. Maybe your just not that interesting or outgoing?
All of my friends grew up and moved all over the state and country. We haven't ever had trouble making new friends or hanging out with new, fun people. I can always find stuff to do, but those are the things that made the area popular(outdoor activities). You're definitely not gonna meet people eating at a restaurant or at the movies. I don't expect random people, except black chicks because they love me for some reason, to just come up to me and start a conversation. Out of the people I grew up with, I'd say we are the most outgoing and friendly people I have met around the state.
The people who never left do suck(even the ones I am friends with), but you can easily pick them out when they wait on you at a restaurant or bar. I'd say that out of the people who went to college, 1/3 came back to STP, 1/3 now live in New Orleans/Metairie, and the other 3rd have moved all over. I went to SPS and MHS, but hung out with people from all over western St Tammany growing up, from the brokest white trash rednecks to some of the wealthiest people in the state. I do understand that some people are gonna be shitty, but just can't see it as a generalization for the entirety of Covington
I agree 100% with everything you said. I went to SPS. My parents still live right on the edge of old Covington, and I plan to move back next year after school. The people are definitely not standoffish. I'm not going to get into the pissing contest of what's a "better" place to live, but it's going to be way different than the city. I like Covington because it's really close to everything I like to do, and even though it's grown, it still has a small town feel to it. The Tchefuncte runs right through the middle of it. It's minutes from fishing in the lake. It's surrounded by undeveloped land, much of which is held by hunting clubs. That's what I'm into, but that's not for everyone.
You can choose to live in the "new" part of the town along 21 or lower 190, or you could move north and get some land and get away from all of that. Either way, you're minutes from the downtown area, and there are fun things to do. Recently (since I graduated high school and left), the bar scene has really grown, and there are a couple of venues that get some really good shows every once in awhile. The Green Room is kinda shady, but there are good open mic nights and some good musicians come through. It's also half an hour from the city, an hour from Baton Rouge, and it's got a really good school system as compared to the rest of the state. Just like HT said...some folks are gonna be shitty, but that's everywhere. I definitely wouldn't describe Covington as pretentious. Mandeville...maybe so. But not Covington or Madisonville.

On the right side about half way up. Big property that they used to flood for ducks up on top of a hill. Main house(parent's) is on the west side.

As far as 190 goes, I call 190 from the Causeway to into Covington and then it takes a left goint towards Hammond. I also don't call the area from 190 to 59 hwy 190. Highway 22 for me starts where 59 hits "190", and continues west until forever. There is also a business 190 that goes through downtown Covington, but everyone calls that Boston St all of the way until it meets up with the regular 190 by Covington High.

I have family that used to live there. Very boring so probably a good place to raise kids who will claim they're from Nola.

That "huge chuck of property" was our back half, yal bought it from us. Did yal ever get many birds back there when yal flooded for ducks?

Not me, their parents did. Definitely had some good times out there though. I haven't hung out with the 31 year old in years. I lived in BR for too long and he was busy at Ole Miss. IIRC, the kids built some houses on that property, but I haven't been up the in 10 years, so I don't know.
I just remembered how many stickers he had on the headliner of that green Z71. You could barely see any fabric
I never duck hunted out there. I think his dad wouldn't let us or something, but can't remember. He and his little brother did shoot some decent deer down in that bottom though. My dad is still buddies with their uncle, but I haven't heard much otherwise

Born and raised in Mandeville. Graduated from MHS, moved back after I graduated LSU. got married to a Covington girl, moved to Covington for 8 years. Recently moved to Mandeville as a temporary place while we build in Abita. Our place in Mandeville is one block off the lakefront and it's awesome being so close. We take almost daily walks with our 1 year old. I'll miss being this close to it, but I need some space from my neighbors. I love the Northshore and probably will always live here.
