Hour from Austin, Houston, or San Antonio is a different answer.

One great Tennessean once said “you may all go to hell, I’m going to Texas.”

My cousin works remotely/hybrid where he has to work in Dallas 2 days a week. He lives near Lindale and Tyler in a really beautiful neighborhood near a lake if that's your style. It takes him an hour and a half to get to uptown Dallas if he leaves early enough.
This is the way to do it no matter which city you are economically tied to. 1.5 to 2 hrs from Houston Dallas or San Antonio get you in some nice areas.
If you like smaller communities like I do. In office at Houston 2 days a week id love a place near Brenham or Lufkin.
For Dallas I’d go with Athens or Lindale.
For SA I’d go with Kerrville or Fredericksburg

the flat land and pine trees of east texas aren't nice or worth moving for
LOL at the thought that East Texas is flat piney woods. There’s nice hills all over Deep ETX and up in the I-20 corridor near Tyler. It’s not flat woods like SETX.
But hey think what you want.

Doesn't really have anything directly to do with the discussion; just a good excuse to post Ronnie and the boys:
Give me T for Texas, Give me T for Tennessee
Give me T for Texas, Give me T for Tennessee
