Next time I took an Uber with a friend, I had her ask about her rating. She was a 4.1. The horror. She freaked out just like I did. We asked the driver. He said the same thing. Tipping. If you don’t, you just might get dinged. Of course, getting dinged is no big deal. While drivers could decide not to pick up some schmuck with a low rating, another driver eventually well.
But still.

You should if they know how to drive and keep a clean car. Bonus bucks if they are normal and can hold a decent conversation. Uber rates are extremely low, throw your driver a bone if you're a decent person.

Uber's whole business model revolved around paperless transactions and upfront costs. That's what made them successful. Unfortunately assholes with guilt feel the need to throw money at someone so now it's expected.

Wait We don't have cabs where I live so when we travel and use cabs (seldom) I've tipped.
Recently used uber from LGA to Manhattan. I didn't tip and I felt bad after. Clean car and he never said a word other than my name when he got us and thank you when he dropped us off.

There's a young dude in BR who drives a mini van with disco ball, lights, iPad on the back of the head rests to pick your own tunes, and a badass sound system. I've tipped him both times

I tip sometimes when I have cash and they have a nice, clean car or they provide great service.
I had a woman pick me up from a bar at 2AM and she had cold waters in a cooler for riders. I gave her a $5 tip on an $8 ride because the world needs more people like that.

As drunk as I've been at times when taking an Uber (sometimes so drunk that I was surprised I was able to properly use the app), I genuinely expected to have a low rating.

I'm always pretty respectful and talkative when I'm hammered in an Uber, so I'm not surprised.
