I purchased an product online the other day and they had an option to tip. Not for the driver but for the person who boxes it up I guess.

20% Outstanding job and you put yourself in harm's way.
Otherwise, they get 0.

I think it's generous but if you can convince me otherwise, I'm willing to listen.
I mean.. if your default is to tip 10% at a restaurant for a “good job” and 15% for an “outstanding job” then yeah, you’re kind of a shitty tipper.
That's because norms have shifted. I'm about to turn 64, and they have shifted in my lifetime twice. Up until I was in my late teens, 10% was considered the customary tip for good service. Not tipping for mediocre service was not considered rude (except maybe by your server).
Somewhere in the early 80s, maybe the late 70s (I was not that tuned into that stuff, and my family did not eat out much then), it shifted to 15%, with 10% still being considered adequate. Sometimes in the 90s it shifted to 18%, then 20% now.
It was also customary to tip on the pre-tax amount. Now I am not sure what people expect; the receipts you get with the tip calculated vary from restaurant to restaurant.
quote:
Most adults I know generally tip in the 18-20% range. I usually tip about 20%.. more if the service was great, less if it was bad.
I'm a generous tipper by nature. 20% is usually my base number, and I usually tip a little higher. I won't go below 18% even for subpar service unless someone is just bad at providing service in a way that seems either intentional or apathetic. But the escalating attempts at shaming people into tipping more than they typically would is kind of getting under my skin.

I don’t know if I’ve ever stiffed a server,
I don't think stiffing a server is the right way to, a small tip adequately shows your displeasure.

I quit using cash b/c it's cheaper to use a cc in the long run

You’re better than I am. Because I would’ve demanded my change and then likely not even tipped after she stole that money from me. And potentially even let a manager know that their employee is pulling that bullshite.
That would’ve pissed me off big time.

CC for everything.
Cash for everything "else".
Cash for everything "else".

Growing up 15% was normal tipping. Why would that ever go up? As the price of food rises so does the tip.

You must be a retard, I never have any issues. It's not rocket science to figure out a tip and hit the correct button. They even have a custom tip button if you're a cheap arse.

I fully agree that the tip expectations have become unreasonable. What smarts me even more is the lack of a simple "thank you" by wait staff when it's obvious I'm tipping 20% or more in cash when I tell the waiter to keep the change. Or at a Waffle House using a debit/credit card where they see how much I tipped as I enter the smount or even displayed on their side of the monitor with no simple thank you expressed by them.
