One company I worked at used SAP R/3. The guy who managed it told me that you don't configure SAP to your business, you adjust your business to suit SAP.
A year later I read an article about how HP had a failed SAP implementation for their supply chain. When news came out their stock took quite a hit.

While I understand that these implementations suck massively, the world wouldn’t function at scale without them. SAP is one of the few softwares that allow enterprises to function at a global scale.
