Maybe they were experts, I don't know. They didn't speak English

wtf is a "high end" sprinkler system?
That's what I don't get. PVC is PVC. The only difference in those systems are the different heads and the cost in upgrading those is negligible. Even the timers are all about the same cost based on how many stations you have.
The money in doing a sprinkler system is labor. Not the parts.

Actually, there is a difference between using Hunter brand pro-sprays and PGP rotors vs using that Orbit or Toro shite from Home Depot. And using quality valves and controllers. There is a difference.
But the OP comes off as an all around jack-arse.

No good for you. More people should do this. frick contractors skirting the law. That dude was probably not withholding and remitting employment taxes on their wages either.

Just because they couldn't speak English and may have been illegals (how do you know for sure they were illegal, or were you profiling) doesn't mean they wouldn't do a good job. We've had several jobs done by non-English speaking workers, mostly Spanish speaking, and have had no problems. They worked their asses off!! Fortunately I speak Spanish, so I could communicate with them, though we never questioned their ability.
My yard guys (well, except for the owner) can't speak a lick of english. But they understand "Cut here" and "No cut here". That's all that really matters. Plus, when it's time to rake leaves/clean up/trim bushes etc., I make sure my daughter is home when I talk to them just in case they don't understand my hand gestures.
OP needs to unbunch his panties. The workers new what they were supposed to do... install a sprinkler systems. And would have done a dang good job of it as well.

I understand the quality difference but the cost isn't that great though to call it "high end"...is it?
80% of that job cost is going to be labor.

i can't imagine the upgrade cost on all the equipment being more than $200-$300 total. but frick, i do it too, when i go to roomstogo for new furniture, i tell them to take me to the high end section of the store

Probably not on a typical residential job.

soaker hoses work 10x better than sprinklers from my experience.

Can you get the "higher end" stuff at a supply house or is that order only?

Ok hoss. Call me a cry baby all you want, but I'm pretty tired of being a law abiding tax paying citizen subsidizing welfare, health care, and benefits for all these pickup truck contractors' illegal employees that they pay illegally.
