It is really unfortunate that travel ball is the new norm, but if you're kid has any ounce of talent, you are pretty much forced to this now days. Rec ball has gotten so bad.

I certainly don't think my kid is going pro, but at the same time he's been really good his entire baseball career, so much like lsu777, I don't want to make that decision for him.

If you're basing your decisions on whether to sign your kid up for something or not (could be chess club who cares) based upon things you want to enjoy in your life.... Then I'd say you are a pretty selfish person and need to take a look within about what is important to you.

For me, it's my kids and always will be. I've had plenty of good times in my life, but now it's all about what makes them happy.

this

and maybe im jaded....my dad gave up racing boats and fishing every weekend for me to play so i had a great example. but couldnt imagine saying...yea son, i know you love baseball and want to play in HS....but dad likes fishing too much for all that, sorry.

I didn’t realize that it was that competitive to make a high school team, or that lack of participation in travel ball excluded one from making a team. Sounds like a raw deal for the talented kids that come from families unable to afford the lifestyle that comes with travel ball.

Haven't you been paying attention? Those families are laughably naive.

Exceptions will always be made for talent at the dismay of a dad that thinks his son is the next Mike Trout.

its extremely competitive. like barbe this past year took i think 6 from in district, 4 out or something very close to that. there are only so many resources to go around and only 1 field and in louisiana usually no more than 5 coaches max and many schools less than that.

it doesnt but

1) the amount of 13-14 year old rec leagues in louisiana is down to only a handful

2) with very rare exceptions you are not going to be ready for the level of competition you will see.

maybe, but the great thing about sports, the game doesnt care what your families income level is, where you come from, what color or nationality you are.....its takes what it takes to be good...period

those travel ball kids are also lifting weights, many times starting in elementary school, taking private pitching and hitting lessons and many times fielding lessons and sometimes more than one a week, hitting 3+ buckets a day at home 300+ days a year, doign long toss and bat speed programs by themselves at home on their time.

despite what the OT likes to think...it isnt parents living through their kids either. the kids see how the HS kids work, they look at stuff on youtube daily and they have goals.

it is what it is. not the kids that are really good fault others cant afford it.

hey there are other sports...competitive baseball isnt for everyone, just like soccer isnt.

ftr most of the travel teams offer fundraisers or the ability to get a sponsor.

I’ve wondered why is travel baseball so big but you don’t see the same stuff for basketball or footbal

Basketball is huge....the demographics are vastly different.

Football participation has gone down for years and outside of camps not much money to be made as you can't get 20 teams in every city all summer lone.

Maybe in higher classifications or traditional powers. My nephew only played rec ball and he made his HS team as a freshman. Most of his teammates didn't play travel ball either. They weren't a dynasty, but they made the playoffs three of his four years (one season was shut down by COVID).

Without sounding too much like Uncle Rico, I wish this type of regimen was part of my developmental years.

yea at smaller schools in small towns, sure but aint happening at schools like the ones that are traditionally in sulphur at the end of the year. even in the lower classifications that would be rare.

Obviously this isn't the case for every school. But lsu77 is spot on for schools like Barbe.

ETA: I'd be surprised if Barbe had a single kid make their baseball team in the last 5-6 years that didn't play select baseball at some point.

Your responses in this thread seem to suggest that making the HS baseball team is the most important thing in life and if your putting a sizable portion of your disposable income in travel ball in the hopes of making the HS team, your spending habits suggest it is of most importance
