due to an outside hire fresh out of college with 0 experience in the field that was willing to do the job for $25k cheaper than my salary demand was, which makes him the first supervisor that will be paid less than the employees.
That's not a good sign of things to come. Time to look for a better company to work for.

Is there a bigger kick in the sack than this?
I wouldn't take it personally. It's not like they just took a college kid; they took him so they could save $25,000.
And maybe you won't have to wait 3-5 years. Maybe this kid won't be able to cut it. Maybe he'll get overwhelmed. A number of things could happen and you're in a solid position to take advantage if something goes down.

Start looking elsewhere. If they're hiring people with no experience for less money, it's a sign your job could be on the chopping block in the near future. They don't value experience, only the ability to hire for less money.
I would have to agree. The experience and salary level of the guy that they hired is so out of whack with yours that the only options are:
1) They are trying to cut to the bone, either out of necessity or the managers get bonuses for saving costs and are hoping to rack up for a couple of years before the house of cards come crumbling down.
2) The salary that you were expecting was unrealistic from the get go and the job is such that experience is either irrelevant or can be quickly gained. Thus, why pay big money?
Only you know if number 1 or 2 is closer to the mark. Either way, they're not going to wake up in six months, say that they've made a horrible mistake and give you whatever you want. Seeing what's behind door number 3 may be the smart play.
But like 23 said, don't be rash.

Despite what a lot of people tell you, most hastily made decisions are never regretted.
It won't guarantee smooth sailing at first, but overall I'd have to agree with the idea. You have to be resilient.

Take it with a grain of salt. Something will come your way. Be mature about it and be a great worker regardless. It will turn out better if you smile and keep working hard

Time to move on. Sounds like poorly managed company if they're hiring supervisors with no experience just to save money.
100% this. Being cheap on supervision sounds like a terrible investment.
OP is it possible there is another position opening up soon you may be better suited for and management was being forward thinking?

They could have just given him the promotion but with no salary increase. They just don't value him obviously.

Leave and find something better.
Or threaten to leave and ask for a raise. If you don't get it you are replaceable.

Or maybe he just isn't cut out for the position? Everyone bitched at my wife's office when she was promoted 4 months out of school, but she's the only one with the skills and leadership to get the office to where they wanted it. And magically, she has done it.

This! It's been a major detriment to my company over the years. The "managers" lose sight of the objective because their compensation is linked to cost savings as opposed to the overall performance of their department as it relates to the profitability of the company. Of course this brilliant strategy comes from on high and is not a recipe for long term success.

Your wife is probably micromanaging the hell out those people.

Yeah, as mentioned, I would leave

This is the chumpiest chump shite I've ever heard in my life. This attitude will only guarantee you will get continually fricked. Burn every bridge, frick everyone's wife and make threats that you can't possibly follow up on. Scorched earth!
Also, you should have started stealing office supplies YESTERDAY. Get on that!

Part of me says it's #1 - I've never heard of management getting bonuses based on salaries and such.

Everyone is replaceable. Employers know that. Lots of applicants, few jobs.

Number 1 rule I set for my career, in every job I have is to work my arse off, learn as much about every position. I don't do the minimum, it sucks sometimes but I am not replaceable.
