Or moving to Vars Pizza place, empty building.
That would be the perfect spot for them. Ivars, ZZs, and Duvics all kill it right there. It's the postgrad Tigerland.

Var's pizza didn't have enough parking spaces for what few customers they had so probably not ideal for a bar

Haven't been since 2013. Back then it was pretty much all grad students or post grads.

In my opinion, they messed up when they renovated it.
Uncle Earl's prospered as a cheap dive bar mostly aimed at frat boys and sorority girls who drank cheap beer and vodka redbulls. They had a small stage in the back which was used for bands at private events, usually booked by said frats and sororities.
In the renovations, they removed the stage, classied up the interior to appeal to the "post-college yuppie" crowd that frequents places like Mid City Beer Garden and The Merchant, installed a ton of beer taps to attract craft beer customers, and tried to market higher class cocktails.
Now, had they done this in 2010, it might have been successful, but doing this in 2019, right before Covid and the bursting of the craft beer bubble, could not have been worse timing. By trying to pivot to more expensive drink options, they priced out a lot of their college aged customers. By removing the stage, the same fraternities and sororities that used to rent the bar out for events with bands started renting out Murphy's or The Rev instead (because they have stages). The taps sat idle as the craft beer bubble burst as people cut back drinking budgets and pivoted towards light beer and seltzers. There's a LOT of competition for the few middle class yuppies that drink craft cocktails and craft beer, so they were caught as a middling option. They didn't have food to compete with Mid City Beer Garden or the new ZeeZee's, they weren't as fancy as Hayride, didn't have the beer selection of The Bulldog, lacked the service industry connections of Duvics, and having BRPD constantly setting up DUI checkpoints not half a mile away couldn't help.
I had a lot of good times at Uncle Earl's. I wish their owners all the best, and hope that they're more successful in their next iteration.

The Bulldog
Is this still a thing? I remember barely even being able to get into the place on pint night (Wednesday night I think) circa 2013. It was crazy busy.
