I can see stayingwith the a/c in order to prevent/ minimize civilian casualties. One of the bravest things a pilot can do.

Back in 85/86 we had a civy pilot flying an F-86 gunnery tow bird that lost his engine on t/o. To miss a newly constructed condo just off Tyndall AFB, he stayed with the bird giving hard rudder input to keep it from taking out the condo. Punched at very last seond and busted up his leg real bad on ejection from holding it on the controls.

Initial speculation was that the accident might have been due to pilot error, that the leader might have misjudged his altitude or speed and the other three pilots repeated the error.[4] However, the Air Force concluded that the crash was due to a jammed stabilizer on the lead jet. The other pilots, in accordance with their training, did not break formation.[6]

Sorry to hear this on all fronts.

The Angles lost a couple of pilots several years ago ... we had pictures from a year or 2 earlier with one or 2 of the deceased pilots from the July practice when they landed. Kids LOVED meeting the Blue Angel pilots.

This just makes me sad.
