YOUR DRAFT NUMBER
53
WAS CALLED IN 1970.
If your birthday was just 3 days earlier, your draft number would not have been called.

Honestly it must have been a terrifying experience waking up each day not knowing if you might be get a piece of mail which may or may not be a death sentence.
I was approaching draft age when the first Gulf War happened. It was the first serious war since Vietnam and there was a lot of worry about the US implementing a draft again.

What?
No.
They key part in SPR you folks seem to be forgetting is how Ryan became an only child.
Sole survivor deferments only come into play if your family has suffered a service related death (and it would have to be before the draft, not after).
Law has been expanded overtime to current form where if anyone in the immediate family was killed in action ever, then all other family members have immunity in situations where Congress has not declared war.

Curious how do they handle twins? Me and my brother share the birthday.

Selective service probably calls that a two for one special.

I turned 18 a few months before 9/11. A lot of people thought there was a decent possibility of a draft after that and especially after we got into Iraq at the same time.

so my younger brother would have stayed country side... fair enough, he is smarter than my older bro and I anyway
The only way you'd all be drafted in the 1969 lottery would be if you were triplets born in 1950. The birthday lottery numbers changed each year. My parents three oldest children are males and my older brother was 16 when the war ended, so they watched the lottery drawing to torture themselves I guess. I only remember my younger brother's birthday being picked once and he was only about 7 or 8 at the time.

There was some solace in knowing that by staying in school you could at least defer it for a while in hopes of the war being ended.
