Yeah, there was a girl on one of our trips that panicked and had to go up. It happens. I'm always a little nervous at the start but once I get down and start regularly breathing, it's great. The only think that makes me panic is when my buddy, aka my husband, decides to check something out without telling me. Next thing I know I just see flippers swimming away. He's so ADD.

Yeah, I was trying to clear on the way down and couldn't. I had a small allergy issue and it wasn't allowing me to clear.
I kept descending, stupidly, and then tried to force clear with too much pressure.
I'm so powerful that I blew a hole in my eardrum

Go talk to Mark at Underwater Adventures. Great guy and will answer all of your questions with no pressure. People that try diving either absolutely love it or hate it. If you think you would like it, def go try it.

Omg that would have freaked me out!
I couldn't ever get over the fear of what happened if something went wrong underwater. Like if my regulator fell out of my mouth, etc. I realized I would likely not stay calm like you are supposed to and just start panicking. Diving def isn't for everyone and if you can't keep calm you could end up killing yourself. I didn't want to end up a cautionary tale to others

Call Suzanne or Cody at Underwater Adventures, they will tell you everything you need to know. They are good people. It is a life changing hobby and you're never too old for it.

That's 3 votes for UA, looks like I'm gonna go with them. I'm just getting things figured out now, probably won't even have time until Summer to get certified. Although I may be able to squeeze some time in during the Spring.
I know I can find this out by calling them but I'm lazy...how long does it generally take to get certified? Like how many hours under the water and what not

We did a weekend class for it. Spent 4-5 hours Friday evening and 10 hours on Sat and 10 hours Sunday doing all the classroom work, written tests and pool time. Then spent another weekend(most of the day Sat and Sun) doing our open water cert dives. We did our open water cert dives with the same dive shop that taught us(they took us to the lake). However....if you get a form from dive shop you can do your open water dives anywhere. Some of the people in our class waited and alloted a couple days on their upcoming vacations to do their open water dives there.
ETA: Because we had issues with ear infections, etc....we had to do an additional day of open water dives to complete skills we didn't get to finish cause the ear stuff put us behind.

They have classes every month, sometimes twice a month. It is a few weeknights of class, two days (weekend) of pool skills, and then a checkout dive trip (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) and voila. You're certified.
If that doesn't work for you they can do private classes. Just call 'em up. They can answer any of your questions prob faster and with more knowledge than us haha

Ive been to UA and they are a great group. I was certified in New Orleans by HARRYS. They have a 16' heated indoor pool on site. They offer trials once or twice a month and you can jump in and try the gear with little to no experience for very cheap.
They also offer an all-in-one weekend type of class should you decide to get certified there. Either way, like others have said, there is a lot of unexpected cost if you have to travel to FL and book a hotel for your actual open water test.
I dive regularly on one of Audubon Aquarium's dive teams and I love it. There is also the option of beginner scuba on a cruise which I found to be a great experience for beginners.

Oh and UA offers a intro to scuba for $75 - that way they/you can find out if it's something you want to pursue/able to clear your ears :) and if so $50 of your $75 is put towards your class. They provide EVERYTHING.
