because he wants the hot water to stay hot. If you turn off the heat...no more hot
But then the hot water heater would be useless because now the water is cold.
Maybe that's what's wrong. The hot water got cold. Go to Lowes and buy a cold water heater to get the cold water hot. Then the hot water heater will start working again.

Most likely a blown lower element. That's usually the cause of running out of hot water too quickly. Good chance to clean the lime deposits out of the bottom of the tank when/if you change it out.

If it's very old now would be the time to replace it before April 16 when new Fed Regulations go into effect. The new ones will be larger and may not fit in the existing location. The cost of the water heaters and installation will also increase.
Thanks Obama!!

Not worth it for a unit that 9-10 years or older IMO. I know its cheap but on a unit with age its usually a short term fix
you would really recommend replacing the whole water heater every time an element needs changing?...
Comprehension isn't your thing i see

Change the thermocouple. Same thing happened to me last week at the bay house. If it's bad (which I bet it is) it won't be able to keep pilot light lit. Replace thermocouple and re-light.
Eta: well nevermind. Good work

This may sound very cheap of me, but I am. Mine went out over the summer. I have a friend that is a plumber, I called him, as it turns out many plumbers change out heaters with an element burned out all the time, he had like 6 of them laying in his shop. He brought 1 out installed it, didn't cost me anything since he is a friend. Either way it's a cheap way to go.
