Grammar rules are rigid and easy
I am in southwest China and learning Mandarin right now, The basic grammar has been easy to keep straight. The basic sentences are Subject-Verb-Object just like English. Also the number system is easier than English. I'm trying to learn five characters a day, but I'm using pinyin to learn conversational topics.
I was in Mongolia for 2 years, and that language was very difficult. It is not spoken widely enough to make it on chart of tough languages, but I'm certain it would be included. I tested Intermediate-High when I left, and I considered that an accomplishment.

The other thing that makes German somewhat easier is that in typical German fashion, rules are rules and there are few exceptions. No I before E except after C bullshite. Also a lot of English words derive from German. The thing that makes it hard is that they will glom words together to create new compound words. English does that to some degree but German takes it to a new level.

Where I live, it's English.
The verb "be" really fricks up the locals.

English.
Seriously. There is no other language with so many irregular verbs, etc. So many different ethnicities blended.
