Ötzi the iceman found in Italy had 61 tattoos. He lived over 5,300 years ago, was trashy, and all he could find for a job was to be a Shepard.

I've seen some nice looking tattoos, but a majority are stupid.
If you use any of these excuses....
"oh I got this to remind me of my roots"
"oh I got this to remind me to live life to the fullest"
...I seriously think you are a dumbass. What, were you going to forget that shite so you had to have it permanently inked on your body? Everytime I see someone with their name on them I seriously want to question whether or not they would forget their name if it wasn't permanently inked on them. When I need to remember something I write it on the back of a business card and stick it in my wallet. Bible verse tattoos? Majority I know with them are so far gone on drugs its really not even funny.
22 years old btw.

In my opinion, the popularity of tattoos grew and became a prominent part of our culture when Allen Iverson and Dennis Rodman started inking their entire bodies. After that, it took off among sports stars. Sports stars having them, displayed them prominently on TV during their games. Then it took off among the younger generation and has stayed strong as part of the American culture. That has been my personal observation.
That's part of it but I think music had just as much, if not more, to do with it. Also just a personal observation.
This probably started the trend for black guys to get sleeved up like white dudes. Prior to iverson you really didn't see that too much. I don't think rodman had too much influence on the young guys at the time since rodman was a weirdo that also dressed in drag. Iverson was definitely more looked up to.
I think the op is referring to the trend of the singular armband or tramp stamp, which started early 90s, before iverson

I hate that tattoos have become nothing more than fashion for most people, and to some extent you have to look at it on an individual basis. People with bad judgement and no creativity are going to have bad tattoos, that's a given. Hell, people are lining up left and right in today's society to prove how "redneck" they are, so the herd mentality is evident everywhere.
And in terms of it being some kind of unequivocal example of conformity, I wonder how many times this morning the anti-tat crowd has checked their Facebook and Instagram pages? Did you remember to post your trite, inspirational quote? And your 200,000th picture of your adorable children? And don't forget your daily required minimum of selfies...

Back in Pathology Class in a forensic lecture I remember hearing if you see a tattoo the person had either been in the service, jail, a gang, or all the above

Never. They look like trash and anyone who has attempted to explain the "deep significance" of theirs sounds fricking retarded. In college, we auto-balled anyone with a tattoo.
Also, as the post a few above me. I'm absolutely an unapologetic conformist. But not with tats or Facebook (or whatever else you were talking about that suburban mouth breathers do). I wear a suit, go to work, own a home, etc. No one would mistake me for anti-establishment. It's the idea that someone thinks they're NOT conforming by getting a tattoo that makes it... interesting.
Frame of reference: I'm 27.

First athlete I remember really catching my eye was Allen Iverson when he got to the NBA.

Have a buddy that got a "tramp stamp" before it was known as a tramp stamp and a woman thing....
Now he's stuck with it....
Story about our friends playing golf and playing a hole without shirts... Beer girls come around and the first thing we hear form them.."Look, he's got a tramp stamp..."

When will you fools realize that people get tattoos for themselves and really don't give a shite what others think about them? Having a full sleeve and a half sleeve doesn't stop me from being more intelligent than 99% of you and earning more than 98% of you.
The overwhelming majority of people who hate on tattoos are simply afraid. They feel like they have to put down others to boost their own self esteem. When you're the boss, you're not afraid to live your own life the way you choose.

Strange but true fact: in Japan, if you go to a public or hotel pool, they make you wear clothing to cover your tats before you can get in the water.
