Gotcha. I just had a buddy finish a 3 month stint working 7/12s without a single day off over there.....I couldn't have done that.

I think the math depends on if your OT is straight time or time and a half. He did it at time in a half which comes out to $53k / yr base. At straight time, it's $80k a year.
Reasonable assumption on his part
But would it really be that bad to make 53 a year base?

Ok so if you make $25 an hour that’s 53,000 a year
Base time
Means you make 37.50 overtime. Ten hours a week is 520 hours a year times 37.50 is 19,500 in my overtime.
My math is right....

I guess I just don't see a 50 hour work week as being very demanding

Depends. I had people take jobs with that as a base straight out of college, but I wouldn't/didn't.
When I was managing restaurants, I would have loved a base of $53k.

You are correct if assuming time and a half. My guess since he is laughing, he gets straight time OT.

Sure you could if you put your mind to it. We do this every year.

my old company i worked for was salary, but for some tax reason they made us clock in and out every day and on our check it broke down our hours by hourly pay. They said we couldnt go over 40 hours per week
i accidentally didn't clock out for lunch one day and noticed i had an additional $30 on my next check for an extra hour.
For the next 6 years i never clocked out for lunch and ate at my desk and made an extra $600 a month and nobody ever noticed or said anything..

My guess is that he only knows he makes $25 an hour and has no clue what his base annual salary is

Depends on the occupation.
2hrs extra a day,/ extra 10hr day can be impact full depending on job duties, commute time, etc.

IHow often do your employees have to work overtime? How many guys work the extra hours? It might make since to hire a new employee or two.

I did for sure work 80+ for years during Christmas when I was working in restaurants because it was gobs of money.
I'm sure I would if my company approached me about working like that. I just enjoy my weekends and exploring new places/restaurants since I just moved. If I was working 7/12s, I would have a lot of free cash for a vacation the day the 3 months was up.

First of all, my response to you was just the first paragraph when talking about how working the extra 10 hours might actually cost some people more than they make. The 80 hours a week thing was directed at some earlier responses.
Like you said, you have a responsibility to provide for your family and raise your children. If you’re working 80 every week, you’re providing, but how much time do you really have left over to spend time with and raise your children?
With my job, I have times where I work a lot of extra hours and times where I can knock off early and spend extra time with my kids. As long as my job gets done, it doesn’t matter. Before I had kids, I worked all kinds of crazy hours. Why do you consider it “being a pussy” if you make plenty of money to provide for your family without having to make OT and value the extra time with your family more than making a few extra dollars? For most of my life, money was the biggest limiting factor for what what I could do outside of work. Now, I make enough and have a modest enough budget to where time is the biggest limiting factor. So, I value the extra time with my family higher than I value the extra money.

For me, I make a little under $20k a year in OT working 50 hrs week at straight time OT so my base (which I know) is significantly higher than $53k.

Some people don’t want to work more than absolutely necessary. If you have guys who want to work more, bring them on and let them beat the other people out.
ETA: Also, the job isn’t everything. People have lives outside of work.

For me i work over 10 hours a week overtime and don’t get paid one red cent extra. I do get competition bonuses and a very nice salary though
Posted on 9/12/18 at 7:14 am to Lsuhack1
You're right. I make close to an additional $30,000 a year working 10 hrs of OT a week on average. My math was off. It's early. I was saying 520 hrs of straight time, not taking into account that it's multiplied times 1.5.

I can definitely agree with that. If you have a 50 minute commute then that really squeezes your days a bit working additional hours.
For most of 2017 I was working 12 hour days with a 45 minute commute each day. I almost quit.
