More actual records sold than for any other song.

Dad told me that the reason it was so popular was that it appealed to millions of men in the uniform who would prefer to be home for Christmas instead of fighting Germans, Italians or Japs

Maybe, but still not as much as people who sought to and did monetize Christmas for themselves even though they didn't celebrate it and don't believe in Christianity.

And that's the majority of famous Christmas songs, sadly.
