The best method for self defense is training in multiple disciplines. That's why the best fighters in the world are MIXED martial artists. You need stand up and ground fighting.

This the correct answer.

Just a few weeks of boxing instructions will go a long way in helping one protect himself in an altercation. In fact, a few boxing skills will put you way ahead of 99% of the folks out there in a fight.

Some type of wrestling/grappling skills will cover the rest.

But in a real street fight where your life could be in danger, a poke to the eye is pretty effective. It will send the biggest, badest dude running away in agonizing pain.

A hard kick to the knee, a throat punch or slap/punch to the ear can be pretty devastating.

These were some of the dirty tricks we learned in the military in a hand-to-hand situation.

Just a word of warning, you could be held criminally liable and will be probably be sued if you do use some of these techniques.
Cause ya know, he was a 'good boi' who was turning his life around, even though he just got out of jail for assault and robbery for the third time.

Short of a quick knockout most fights go to the ground, ju jujitsu is king there, won’t save you from getting earholed with a a pool cue/beer bottle.

Do you want to get sued or jailed for manslaughter? If you haven't noticed, most the world around you is concrete. This isn't feudal Japan. You're not slamming people down on elevated wood floors covered in rattan.

Why would you limit yourself to just your hands? Do you know how much more powerful your legs are and how much more reach you have with them? Also, it only takes one punch to get knocked out. Striking is feast or famine. Even the untrained can get a lucky punch in and knock your arse out.

Where did you get this? Krav Maga is the answer.

In a real life situation, it’s very rarely a good idea to be on the ground.

I’ll admit that’s all I’ve ever done, about 5-6 years of boxing iirc 14-maybe 20. I don’t know a lot about BJJ, was my interest in starting this thread and asking. I’m interested in getting in it but wasn’t sure if my age, well into my 40s was too old. My niece is considering getting in it also and she says it’s good for females too

I’ve reread my op, did I not use BJJ every time or did I leave a J out once?

I definitely don’t know anything about Krav Maga

quote:

Krav Maga (/kr??v m??g??/; Hebrew: ??? ????, ['k?av ma'ga(?)], lit. "contact combat") is a military self-defence and fighting system developed for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Israeli security forces[1][2] derived from a combination of techniques sourced from Boxing, Wrestling, Judo, Aikido, and Karate.[3][4] Krav Maga is known for its focus on real-world situations and its extreme efficiency

It is widely considered the best hand to hand fighting technique, that is accessible for everyone to learn. That said, my personal defense is a glock with critical duty ammo.

Ive carried a gun everyday since the Lafayette AMC Johnston shooting. I was there the night before that happened. I always went to the latest movie the day before I flew offshore, to help stay awake. I was at that theatre once a month.

If you’re good at boxing and I’m good at bjj, what happens when I close the distance on you? You don’t know how to defend when I close the distance, because you havent trained grappling, and you wont be able to punch me effectively and I’m, say, pinned to your back.
Boxing is fine, but like others have said, there’s too much variable. If you want to learn self defense - its bjj. If someone is far enough away to box you, you are far enough away to run. If they chase you, they will have to get ahold of you. Then, you’ll be fine.

Its not. Just be careful going with other, younger white belts in your first year, and leave your ego (which includes your desire not to lose or get out-athleted) at the door.

It is.

Funny you mention that. I had a guy in Niigata that was an Israeli tell me some cool trivia.

A few days ago, I had a weiner tot talking of choking me out. It made me think of the Israeli. He told me two ways to stop it when some buffoon is coming to choke you out. The first one, is if you see him coming, light him up, and zip him up.

If, for some reason, he gets the drop on you, do the other one.

I don't disagree with any of what you said. When I was doing boxing I'd never heard of BJJ. You make excellent points.

If your opponent "is good at boxing" and you "close the distance", you'll be hit, harder than you thought possible, probably multiple times. A trained boxer delivers punches with stunning power, with good speed, and in combinations. You will likely lose some coordination, ability to remember your next move and probably consciousness.
Also most boxing takes place far closer than folks realize. You get close, and he realizes a fight is about to happen, you won't fare well.

Now, if he doesn't realize (somehow) you two are about to fight, you may do ok. Once you get a hold of him, don't give him 20" of space. It will hurt.

Because UFC.
It's good to know how to get yourself out of a bad situation on the ground.
Don't believe the statistics that X% of fights go to the ground.
Bad to be on ground when homey has friends around and rolling on cement fricking sucks
