There was something very surreal about it as a Parade. Toward the end of their parading, it was really clear that they just DGAF at all, nor did 90% of the people out on the street at the time. Yet, they still did so and there was something really cool about seeing it pass in the drunken haze of Mardi Gras night.
I always loved that parade. There was something mysterious and so old school traditional about it. It was one of my favorites. Made a point not to miss it. The crowds were thin Uptown for it. That may have been part of it. It was quieter than the other parades.

They ride Monday night only to delay Orpheus every year.
Not sure why this made me laugh, but it did.

Spill the beans... how do I join?

were your parents and or grandparents members? If yes, then you already know. If no, you won't be joining. Better go try to get in Endymion or Bacchus.

I always thought the parade sucked....hardly any marching units, cheap with throws....
There have been good points made in this thread from all perspectives....
But one thing I hope all agree with is that DOROTHY MAE was a right effing cow in the worst possible sense

Too bad you're banned from the ceremony

I'm picturing some Eye's Wide Shut type shite when this goes down.
Am I wrong?

I think it's a shame Comus doesn't parade anymore but it really is more about the ball. I was too young to remember the last parade but do remember my dad and I going to the Comus den to see the floats every year after the fact. I'm glad Proteous started rolling again. My favorite parade with Rex as a close second.

When I lived in NOLA I liked opening night (Cleopatra) and Samedi Gras the best.

That's awesome and does not surprise me in the least.

They do. It's called Chaos now.
The Momus ball is after Knights of Chaos parade the Thursday night before Mardi Gras. Technically two separate organizations, but you get it.
Comus can parade, but won't just to say FU.

Most of the members either don't want to parade cause they are old and boring, or ride in other Krewes now
I was about to post and make the point that a parade made up of 75% wheelchairs and walkers would be a drag.
ETA: I get the tradition of the last parade and all, but I found it boring. I was past ready to call it a night by then or, in truth, ready to get laid before I passed out.

If people were really honest, they'd admit there are about 50% too many parades.

IDGAF if Comus or any of the other old line parades roll or not. DMT went about it the wrong way, thinking she could legislate with whom people could associate...but ultimately her point was that these racist organizations (and they ARE racist) were conducting business -- sometimes private, sometimes public -- at their luncheon clubs and minorities and non-old money whites, weren't getting a seat at the table. It's fricking ridiculous anyway, grown arse men in tights pretending to be royalty. The Zulu parade practically exists entirely as a satire on Comus/Rex/Proteus/Momus.
I know a few people associated with the Pickwick/Boston/Louisiana Clubs, and thankfully, many of the younger guys don't take that shite as seriously as some of the older guys, many of whom spend every waking second of every day thinking, nay dreaming, about the next Carnival. Like that Henry Schindler douchebag. That guy would kill himself if Mardi Gras ceased to exist.
If people understood and appreciated the real role politics and race had in the creation and history of New Orleans Mardi Gras, they might look at it a bit differently.
